Reviews of Tatsushi Japanese Restaurant
J.
Great food, one of the more authentic Japanese restaurants in Wellington. Will recommend getting the sashimi platter!
M.
Authentic Japanese cuisine in town. Our family’s favourite dinning place. Good service and delicious food with reasonable price. Never disappoint us.
L.
Always a great experience, amazing food and fantastic service. Highly recommend the sashimi and chazuke.
S.
The food was so delicious, we went for the set menu as we had never been there before. Salad, refreshing, miso out of this world, chicken tender and spicy, tempura prawns, I literally sat in my seat and savoured them for 10 minutes my mouth had never tasted such well made tempura batter and the prawns melted I'm my mouth, the quality of the produce fresh and tasty. Would we go again, definitely! If we hadn't overindulged in sake dinner would have only come to 80 for the two of us. Great service and food
P.
Absolutely amazing place to dine felt like i was back in japan. Food was devine and service was even better found a spot for me in a busy night with no issues. Definitely bringing my partner next time
S.
Very nice authentic Japanese restaurant, yes the sushi rice can be improved but overall it is great to be able to dine fresh Japanese food.
L.
I love this place, from ambiance to quality of food. I wish I knew about their lunch offers earlier. Their dinner can get pricey if you go often, but their lunch menu is really reasonable. The food is fresh and flavour is on par. Along with the friendly service it feels like a really Japanese restaurant in Japan. I had their assorted sashimi bowl. It was fresh with a good variety of sashimi.
C.
The Japanese food here is so fresh, they have a daily specials menu and they make their own tofu. The portions are not huge but is delicious. Also catered to vegan.
M.
Hands down one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Wellington. It's a fairly expensive dining experice. Dinner for two night cost you about 100 bucks including the drinks. Their yellow fin tuna sashimi is out of this world. If you are open to trying things. The spicy fish roe is highly recommended. Add Asahi draught on tap into the mix for a treat fine dining experience. Great place for first dates.
R.
Very nice and relaxed atmosphere suitable for families or couples. Food tasted great and staff gave a lot of attention to service. The highlights were the Umeshu plum wine, agadeshi tofu and tempura tiger prawns. Definitely returning for another visit.
R.
If Tatsushi wasn't in town I wouldn't know where to go for Japanese food! Their lunch bento box is amazing and comes with a variety of different ingredients which will blow your mind! For dinner they have great range of dishes - quite a few which are seasonal and exciting to try! You have got to try their hand-made tofu - it has astoundingly rich flavour and texture.
Having been to Japan a few times (in particular for food!), I have to say the flavour and innovation of some of the dishes here easily stands toe to toe with food served over there!
The salmon is fatty in New Zealand so would recommend the salmon aburi nigiri for a melt-in-your-mouth experience.
S.
Great eatery in a new location. Food and service was genuine and very enjoyable. Good selection of sake, plum wine and other unique beverages. Reasonably priced and the menu is suited for sharing. Number of vegan and vegetarian options.
B.
Great authentic Japanese food. Portion sizes are smaller, good for ordering 2-3 dishes and sharing. Gets busy so make a booking.
e.
My favourite japanese restaurant in wellington. The most authentic you can get here and decent prices too. Sit by the bar if you can and watch the sushi chef make your food🤤 Nato roll and sashimi is a must!
J.
Probably one of the most authentic Japanese restaurant you will find in wellington. Amazing food with great service. Will definitely come back
J.
This was a really nice hot udon on a cold day, with nice crispy tempura. I’d come back again.
P.
We have finally found our favourite restaurant in Wellington. Service is great and the food is exceptional. AAA+++
M.
Delicious food at reasonable prices. It was my first time there. It was busy. Would advise you to make a reservation to avoid disappointment.
P.
Amazing food and super friendly staff, woukd recommend for sure!!
R.
great food very traditional Japanese style... makes me wish I was back in Japan again.
L.
Small portions but very nice and delicate food, served by authentic Japanese staff. Decoration is simple but elegant. Would definitely recommend !
J.
Glad to find the authentic Japanese restaurant in Wellington. Food and services were great and good value for money.
B.
Been here several times. Good place for sashimi and tempura. Meals are authentic! Which in turn means they are small, not Western portions. Sometimes the staff don't speak English well enough. We have to switch to Japanese to help interpret the orders for the rest of the table.
M.
The assorted sashimi bowl was really fresh and tasted pretty authentic. Service was quick and friendly as well.
A.
Very authentic Japanese food and this is coming from a Japanese person! They specialize in tofu because it seemed liked they made their own. The teriyaki tofu steak was definitely my favourite. This is a must have for sure. I wish they would open a restaurant in Canberra because we don't have many good Japanese restaurants. Small portions but very nice and delicate food, served by authentic Japanese staff. Decoration is simple but elegant. Would definitely recommend !
L.
The one and only true Japanese place in Wellington. Sushi are as good as in Japan. Sashimi bowl and bento lunch box changing daily
H.
Tatsushi delivered, as they always do. For the best Japanese food in Wellington, head over to Tatsushi and you won't be disappointed. Been dining here for 7+ years and sometimes even twice to three times a week so can't recommend enough.
M.
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Wellington; great atmosphere and great food. Nothing beats their karaage chicken with a cold sapporo.
N.
Beautiful. We had the 'san' set menu. Genuinely amazed at the tofu - best I've ever had.
R.
Lovely simple Japanese lunch menu. Meals are very generous in portion and the environment of the venue is lovely. The edamame beans were a bit of a failure for 6 dollars when we literally got only a half filled bowl of 12 beans.
A.
Possibly the most authentic Japanese restaurant in town. Felt like the home food I had in Japan which contrasted with a lot of Japanese restaurants out there that tend to go overboard in sugar and seasoning.
J.
We've been here four times, and it's always been excellent. Very authentic cuisine, not like some of the cheesy, fake-Japanese tourist traps in Wellington. Takes us back to our previous life in Osaka!
D.
My partner and I love Tatsushi. I find their tofu dishes spectacular, which always feels weird cause normally tofu isn't a star of a dish. Their fish is always fresh. We had ahi belly nigiri the other day 🤤. I find their mushroom maki rolls very morish. Their seasonal tempura is on point. Notably the kale and asparagus tempura. Weirdly, the two times I've taken my sister... The foods been mediocre.. which is weird as the other times I've been myself it's excellent. So yeah 4 stars.
K.
I went back recently, and that experience I was able to sit at the counter. It was much more customer friendly that time. I can still not give 5 until I am sure over time, but I hope they can continue to improve their system.
L.
Always has been outstanding
江.
The place has a relaxing atmosphere.
Food is better compared to other Japanese restaurant that I been to. Staff are friendly and helpful.
R.
We've been meaning to visit Tatsushi for a long time. So pleased we did. Family celebration with a large party. Restaurant was full even at 6pm but very spacious and comfortable. Service was excellent and the food was just so delicious we kept having to order more! Good value and an overall lovely experience. We will certainly be back. The salmon steak teriyaki is gorgeous and the tuna sashimi out of this world. Thank you so much.
S.
The food was really good but the portions are too small being too expensive for a small plate
A.
Was good authentic Japanese Ramen with Japanese staff and LOTS of really good pork belly included.
Very good prices for a bowl like that.
J.
Hands down best authentic Japanese food in Wellington. Always a delightful selection on the seasonal and daily menus, try something you've never heard of - you won't regret it. Great for families, casual atmosphere. So good, every time.
J.
Happy with the food certainly, no complaints about it and I can give it a five but overall, I am unable to. I am unhappy about the delivery of the food. Something is a bit off in the order that it was served. Got the soft crab then as I wait for the next one its slowly getting cold and the next and so on and had to follow up for my steam rice too. 😔 Got my meal but the other members of my family are still waiting which is sad and yet the other table next to us started getting their food served earlier than the members of my family. Perhaps tempura takes a bit of time to cook? Hopefully things get better next time but certainly the food is good.
g.
If you like sashimi, the fish here is amazing. Best I've had in a long long time. Good sake too, the only thing not so good was the sushi, the rice was undercooked in the ones we had, which just destroys the delicate taste of the sushi. I hope they improve this in the future, because they have the right ingredients to make some amazing quality sushi.
N.
E.
Very good Japanese food and service. High quality sashimi. Angus steak was tasty but too lean (would have been better with more fat and marbling). Oysters were excellent. Reasonable prices. Restaurant is small with limited seating and very popular so reservation is recommended.
E.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in town. Bento boxes at lunch are very good, balanced meals with small bits of many different things. The sushi and sashimi are always nice and fresh. Dinner menu has lots of variety. Always different tasty seasonal items, specials menu changes regularly. Plenty of small plates that can be shared as well as full sized meals you can enjoy as your own.
S.
Simply the best authentic Japanese food that Wellington central has to offer. Everything on the menu tastes straight out of Japan. Anything else in the city pales in comparison. My personal favorite is some ochazuke after a night out, something I loved having in Japan that you usually don't find in Japanese restaurants overseas!
It can get super busy and full during peak times, even in their new larger location, so I'd recommend making a reservation or at least calling ahead.
C.
New space is darker but can seat a lot more people which is nice. One of their monthly specials - agedashi tofu hot pot with assorted mushroom and chicken was fabulous. Reminds me of the hot pots my own grandmother makes in the fall/winter months. It's been hard to find higher quality Japanese cuisine here in New Zealand. Definitely give this spot a try if you're sick of cheap/terrible takeaway sushi!
J.
As delicious as in Japan, very fresh and well cooked. Great selection of cold & warm dishes and drinks. Staff is really nice and the new location on Edward Street is really cozy. Definitely worth it
N.
Great atmosphere. We didn't order mains but had number of Japanese drinks. Excellent service. With a great selection of drinks, the chicken kaarage starter we ordered was a bit bland. We will be returning to try the mains.
V.
Mediocre experience.
Main dish was coming before starters.
Side salad had several not fresh yellowish greens.
Tuna sashimi came slightly frozen.
Salmon sashimi was ok.
Chicken karage - small portion of really flavorless chicken.
Beef tataki- no comments- couldn't finish.
Service was super passive.
Food and service was really mediocre.
Not coming back
s.
Authentic Japanese restaurant, lunch menu and dinner menu is very different. Lunch more leaving towards bento setting while dinner served traditional stylized dishes. Good drink list selection. Very small restaurant not suitable for large groups. Tables are mostly for 2-4 people. Highly recommend.
J.
Having tried many Japanese restaurants in Wellington, Tatsushi is the best in my opinion and reflects food you might actually find in Japan. Daily sashimi is always fresh and displays a variety of local fish. The menu always interesting, tons of delicious sides, pickles and other small dishes. Setting and staff are nice too.
H.
Love this place. One of the best Japanese restaurant in town. Very clean, friendly and efficient service. You pay in advance so there’s no need to wait for taking order, line up to pay afterwards, etc. so it’s convenient for both customers and staffs. Lunch menu is reasonably priced for its quality. Fresh sashimi. Good for groups, friends and family friendly. Highly Recommended.
D.
Very nice Japanese morsels, with a lively atmosphere.
C.
We went some weeks ago and would and will always go again, amazing food, price and quality is really good too. Compared to earlier negative reviews our service was really good (quick, attentive and genuine)
Thankyou:)
b.
Having lived in Japan for a few years, it was nice to finally find an authentic Japanese restaurant that felt like being back there. Great food and great staff. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for the real deal!

(10/2017)
Nice little Japanese restaurant.
Well located over Victoria Street.
Cozy ambiance and well organized seating in such limited area.
Tasty food. Menu has couple of vegetarian options.
Cheerful staff and fast service with a smile.
Quite popular. Normally busy during lunch and dinner hours.
Ideal for quick bite.
Good place for family and kids.
L.
Excellent food. We ate way too much food but it was really tasty. Staff were fabulous.
E.
This is the most authentic Japanese place I've been. Probably the closest you could get if you are after the real deal, not the 'westernised' Japanese food from chain restaurants. If you are after good, we'll prepared, 'proper' Japanese food, it's the place to go. Very friendly staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Reasonable price too. Can't get it wrong.
K.
Menu is hard to work out. Food is great. Need to explain menu and system better. Had set menum felt hungry after.
N.
Good food and friendly staffs, reasonable price.
Would definitely go back there again for more stuff in the menu that I haven't tried yet.
S.
Probably the only Japanese restaurant i go to these days in Wellington, their new space has a much better seating arrangement, i believe i saw a private function room too. Had their bento box for lunch and it was very good for the price, only minor downfall was the pickles, it didn't seem very pickled and tasted very bland. But hey, all the other times ive been i haven't had any complaints. Worth a try.
A.
Always good food and awesome service
K.
Great all around always high quality and fresh sushi - best Japanese in Wellington
T.
The best sushi restaurant I have ever eaten at. I come from Paris, I have travelled a lot, and this restaurant just made me realize how tasty sushis could be. I just discovered that I had only eaten crappy sushis so far. Once we ate there, my boyfriend and I just came there three times more until we decided to leave Wellington. Can't recommend this place enough. We always ate there at lunch time. Be careful for dinner and think about making a reservation beforehand.
S.
Good Bento. Reasonable price.
J.
Easily the best Japanese food in wellington!
s.
This is a seriously good restaurant. We only eat Asian food when we go out (which is regularly) and my partner and I have spent time in Japan, eating at restaurants literally from Nagasaki in the south to Wakkanai in the north, in flash restaurants and upmarket ryokan as well as down to earth, working class eateries underneath the railway tracks in Tokyo. This place rates amongst the best in its understatement, legitimacy, flavours, menu and wait staff. Just go...
F.
Great range of seafood with daily & seasonal changes to the menu. Well thought out menu & very reasonably priced. The menu really showcases NZ seafood, from Bluff Oysters to fresh sushi & sashimi (gurnard, terakihi etc).
J.
Pretty good japanese in the CBD. At first glance, the decor is rundown and the menu is boring. Im happy to report however that the nigiri and sushi rolls were acceptably fresh, albeit not amazingly fresh. I also tried their warm homemade tofu that was very interesting, yet boring at the same time. Although it wasn't my favourite part of the meal, making tofu in house is impressive; kudos to them.
I didn't try any of the mains, but im intrigued enough to come back and give it ago. But all in all, there was a lack of excitement in the food, and would generally recommend tatsushi for lunch only.
Worth mentioning that the staff were wonderful, which brings me to 4 stars for this wee review
D.
Amazing food and drink, fast and friendly service, loved it!
N.
The food was nice but waiters were not very good at communication and could not explain the menu well. I ended up ordering a side dish for main course.
J.
Decent quality sushi and hot food, but very a small selection of kinds of sushi. The waiters made many unforced errors with our order despite my wife ordering in Japanese.
A.
Probably the nicest Japanese sit down restaurant I've been to
M.
Seriously fresh ingredients meets skill and knowledge here to bring you easily some of the best Japanese food in the city.
S.
The absolute best Japanese in Wellington. This is authentic and as close to Japan as you can get. Located near The Little Beer Quarter in Edward Street, Tatsushi-san has built a cult following to his regulars.
The specials on the menu change daily, with a wide range of sunomono on offer. Fresh sashimi, soft shell crab, gyutataki, teriyaki, agedashi tofu... it's all there.
It's super popular since moving into it's new premise (from Victoria Street), so book in advance to avoid disappointment.
A.
Booking is recommended. Fresh fish, casual atmosphere, nice open kitchen and really authentic based on my past experiences in Japan. Price is decent.
N.
Some of the best Japanese food in Wellington, excellent agedashi tofu and karaage. A decent selection of Japanese sake and daily sashimi and sushi menu, always something interesting to try
V.
Without a doubt the best Japanese food in Wellington. Dining area is beautiful and inviting and the staff are very friendly and accommodating to dietary restrictions. I highly recommend doing an Omakase
V.
What a superb place. Great atmosphere, good food, and the best Chicken Katsu Curry and Prawn Udon noodle we've had outside Japan!!! And prices are great as well!
B.
Went for Ramen Day today, best Ramen you can get in Wellington. Also well worth a visit if they're not doing Ramen, probably the best and most authentic Japanese restaurant in Wellington. Try their warm homemade tofu - amazing! Highly recommended!
K.
Best Japanese restaurant in Wellington! Great authentic Japanese food, good selection of drink and great service. We always enjoy having meal here.
A.
Soooo good, truly some authentic Japanese food that stands heads above the rest in wellington. Reasonably priced, with some hikes reflecting quality. Definitely will be back!
S.

C.
Great food and super friendly staff!!! Arigato!!!
P.
Beautiful food, authentic Japanese cuisine
K.
Best authentic Japanese restaurant in town.
P.
Great to find Tatsushi in their new premise. Fantastic food, as always, but service was very slow. I guess they're still getting accustomed to having to provide table service??
E.
The food is excellent but we caught them on a busy night and waited around an hour for our sashimi. Some complimentary edamame or something to snack on would have gone a long way.
C.
Authentic Japanese restaurant in Wellington. Tucked away in a little lane behind capital market. Benton box is personal favourite, well balanced healthy diet and full of flavour.
N.
Amazing food, best fresh fish quality ever!
The waitress got confused with our bill, which had us wait for 20 minutes, but I definitely recommend it.
M.
Excellent authentic Japanese food. Nothing like the numerous sushi joints all over NZ. If you want real Japanese food served the honourable Japanese wAy this is it
E.
Great variety and average atmosphere, with some tasty Japanese dishes, sake, and sushi/sashimi
A.

Consistently excellent food and service. Some wildly interesting flavours and dishes you will not see elsewhere in Wellington.

This is run by Japanese, so a genuine Japanese experience. Friendly service and I enjoyed the food. My chicken piecces were tender in a light batter.
B.
I like fresh salmon bowl, It's really delicious and not frozen salmon, really fresh salmon. and one of my favorite restaurant in Wellington.

J.
Currently my favorite Japanese restaurant in Wellington, probably the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Welly. The food is yummy.
H.
Really nice Japanese food.
The service can be slow, and the food takes a long time to come out (or comes out in drips and drabs)
I.
Great restaurant with an inviting atmosphere and delicious food, Chef Tatsushi is without a shadow of a doubt one of the most skilled Japanese chefs in New Zealand at the moment.
G.
Very good service and fresh food, their new location is definitely an upgrade in size with a more industrial vibe. Highly recommended.
S.
Chicken katsu was ok
J.
Love this place!! Amazing sushi, stunning squid and very fair prices. Casual lovely dining.
J.
Hands down best sushi in Wellington. Service isn't the best but the food makes up for it. Great lunch specials too.
L.
Couldn't complaint with food and the service. I would recommend Agedash tofu to start with.
L.
Best restaurant in Nz so far. And it is so affordable (compared to other restaurants over here). Seriously, u will be surprised by the quality and price. Especially after u r here for a while
M.
best Japanese food I have had in Wellington. Friendly, speedy service. Arigatou!
J.
Awesome Japanese food. Well priced dishes good for sharing!
A.
Food & staff 5/5. I recommend if you are looking for real japanese meals (no sushi in the menu).
W.
Seriously the sushi is good but the seafood either for sushi or sashimi are slice too thin and that why I only give 3 stars. Not really worth the money.
T.
The sushi was delicious, however the waitresses seemed rushed and the place was a little messy.
A.
Very tasty. Very reasonable lunch prices. Evening more expensive but still great food
R.
