Always welcome the local fish and chip shops in my life. I had fish and some fried calamari. Was super yum. It is a bit more upscale though so I probably will be dining in next time.

Popped in a couple of months ago and had a fantastic meal with friendly staff and a good price. I got the Halloumi Burger and Kumara fries, an easy 10/10. My boyfriend enjoyed his fish and chips as well, we‘ll definitely come back when we are in Wellington. They also have specials on, so definitely have a look what they are offering that day/week!

Thorndon chippery is home to the best hot chips in New Zealand. The curly fries are level above any sort of chip I have ever eaten, they are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, or even as a meal itself. Definitely worth making the trip to get your chips from here rather than from your local fish and chip shop. 10/10 absolutely love this place

Pricey but amazing quality food. Highly recommend their burger of the month as you can tell the chefs love experimenting with new ingredients and flavours which is awesome. Can't go wrong with any of the varieties of chips either :)

Fish is the best I've had in Wellington, kumera chips also a definite 10. Was expecting the same for the burgers but would give them a 7 out of 10 (we had the pork belly and fish burgers).

Coeliac friendly fish and chips, and the best gluten free burger buns I’ve ever had. The chicken burger is a must-have for coeliac since it’s extremely rare to be able to get one usually! Cool little restaurant to eat there and they have craft beer on tap (they do have a gluten-free beer available but the other beers are not coeliac friendly). Highly recommend.

Good little lunch joint with a reliable fish and chip special for $12! Thorndon Chippery is a good local addition and makes lunch much more interesting. They offer a range of fish options and you can choose your style of chip from French to curly, I recommend chunky! The menu offers a few other good choices. Strong burger options include the fried chicken and vegetarian burgers. Plan to order one of their craft beers to go with your little linch. Service is fast from a friendly staff. Go here for a good little work lunch relying on decent prices.

Friendly staff, tasty food, pricey for fish & chips There are something like 30 didn't types of fish on the board but the ones with the rocks is what's actually available. Not sure if this is usual or because I was there 1 hour before closing time but there were about 5 actually available. There was plenty of seating options though the place was busy because most people seem to order takeaway. I had the kingfish in tempura batter with their handcut chips and aioli sauce. This cost around NZD21 which is what I'd expect for fancy fish & chips. The battery had a lovely crunch, the fish was flakey and did not have that old fishy taste at all. It was perfect with a bit of salt and pepper. The chips were just amazing. Crunchy in the outside, hot and soft inside. I can't believe I managed to practically eat them all considering their size but I found them addictive, especially with the aioli, or even just a bit of salt and pepper. Also, apologies for the weird angle on my 3rd photo but I was avoiding a fellow customer's face

The shop itself is very welcoming and beautifully designed this drew us in immediately but I was overall disappointed with my order, I got fish and chips and although it photographed beautiful I found the fish had a weird taste was watery and oily, the chips were “hand cut” I didn’t expect them to be as big as they were and it was like eating Chunks of potato rather than chips, the staff were very friendly, my cousin got curly fries and a burger I tasted her and it was great so I would definitely recommend there curly fries and burger unfortunately didn’t love the fish 😊

Thorndon is certainly the lesser of the two chippery locations, I often find something in my order is overcooked. The bun in my picture was very dry and unsavory, took away from the burger.

What a find. Highly recommend.This is not a run of the mill fish and chip shop. We chose to dine in. Ordered the fresh fish. my fish was in a tempura and coriander batter my husband pan fried terakihi cooked to perfection. We watched continuing stream of people coming in for there take out meals. Lots of wonderful choices wood loved to have tried a lot more.

Excellent Gluten Free Fish & Chips (particularly the chips are exceptional, my partner loves their Curly Fries). Tried the burgers, also superb. A bit annoying having to pay for each cup of ketchup.

Swift friendly service. Delicious food at good prices, nicely presented. The menu presentation was a little confusing for the weekday lunch special - didn't specify that the fish type was set. Delighted that gluten-free batter was not only available, but also at no extra cost! Awesome crinkle cut fries.

For a start, we got our meal here because we found Subway in Thorndon is closed on Sunday's. Out meal cost 3 times what we'd usually spend at our regular fish & chip shop, but they do have a greater variety and more ways to serve fish with 4 or 5 different kinds of fries to pick from. We both chose hand cut fries which were cut a bit too thick for my liking but they were nicely cooked, well drained and not at all greasy 👍

My AirB&B host told me about it. Lovely little place and the best fish burger ever, real fish with a mound of beer battered Fry's. It was all piping hot and tasty. Lovely service too. A new favorite.

Really enjoy getting to the Thorndon Chippery for a meal. We live in Auckland but make a point of going there when we are in Wellington, as it is the only time my GF / Coeliac wife is able to enjoy fish and chips in a separately cooked GF environment. Made even better by having Parrotdog Birdseye IPA on tap - magic! Thanks to The Thorndon and Mt Vic Chippery.

We have ordered some fish fillets, burgers and chips. Good things first. Their chips were great and burgers were decent. Now on to the bad things. The fillets we ordered were supposed to be seared with lot of vegetables. But we were only able to find a small piece of leek in the whole dish. The fish is definitely overpriced and I won't pay $14.80 for that tiny piece of fish fillet in the future. In essence, grab the lunch deals which are great, but don't go for the fish fillets or other overpriced items. Not worth it

Wonderful fish and chips. The young man who serves there is great. Always friendly and helpful and suggests which fish is good. Only place in Wellington with true gluten free fish and chips and they do them so well.

Yum!! We ordered burgers and fries and were very happy! Such a delicious bun to help hold in all of the burger goodness. The fries were also great! We went for the classic agria and the crinkle cut 😊

Best fish and burgers I've had. Would recommend Thorndon Chippery 100%, but go when you're hungry - just one serving of curly fries was enough to fill me up last time! Also, order ahead if you can (by phone or website) as they (understandably) get busy during lunch. My favourites are the fish burgers and crab burger. A thicker dressing on the coleslaw and it would be right up there too. Everything here is super fresh, and I've never had a bad experience.

A must in Wellington, if you like fish. It is all about food here. You go to the counter, you chose your fish (blue cod if it is in the options) from the list of daily fresh options, you choose the sauce, and the type of fries (curly!). Then you enjoy the food in this calm, pretty restaurant. If you have business in the US embassy, this restaurant is you best option for lunch. Prices are very acceptable and the fish is not like the tasteless fried fish you see everywhere.

Kumara chips were best ever. Fish was a little dry but I usually request undercooked so my bad. Chips and calamari was good. I dont usually like coleslaw and coleslaw usually goes off by the end of the day. This one was amazing. Cost an arm and a leg though.

We got off the ferry from the South Island, it was getting dark and we were really hoping for some quality food to wrap up the day. We stumbled across Thorndon's and were absolutely delighted. Some of the best Fish and Chips I've had in a while. Lots of options (and an ice cold beer).

Amazing. Curly fries and pulled pork sandwich is my favourite. Eat in or takeaway. Good variety of chip styles. Design your meal from their "fish and chips" menu. Burgers good too. Coyle of craft beers on tap too if you dine in.

When you get to choose your fish, the batter (or crumbs) for it to be cooked in, and even the style of chips to have with it, you know it's not your regular corner chippie. The choice of craft brews to accompany you meal just ices the cake. The burgers are interesting - albeit rather messy to eat - but the fish (and chips) is what this place is really about. That said, there's always a place for the fiery jalapeno poppers in my order!

Gourmet fish and chips, plus the option of beer or wine, and served up in an historic Thorndon cottage, the Chippery is a Wellington institution with a loyal local following so can be very busy at popular times. Recommended.

Crispy gluten free batter on fish. Yummy coleslaw and chips.

Excellent customer service and great knowledge about the different fish. Tried the panko and the beer batter, and the beer battered chips. Everything was wonderful and fresh, and the chips were some of the best I've had.

Great Agria chips, aioli, the coleslaw was perfect (I'm not a fan of the wet coleslaw you often get at some places). The battered fish was really crunchy and tasty moist Moki, if a bit small but quality matters more than quantity. The baked mussels would have been great if all the herb crust wasn't so overpowering my wife couldn't eat them. A fraction of the crust and it would have been perfect and we took most of it off and they tasted great after that. Will be back.

Craft beer and freshly battered fish with the chunkiest chips in Welly - can't beat it! Majoribanks Chippery often has a more varied selection of fish on offer but Thorndon is excellent nevertheless.

Love this place. Great food and although more than your bog standard fish n chip shop, the service space and food is so so much better. Cajun fish burger and vegan burger and curly fries are supreme

Great fish and chips. However the staff should learn to meet, greet, smile, or do anything that days they ate glad you chose their establishment for a meal.

Four stars only because of the price. Otherwise the fish and the chips are bloody fantastic. the chips are huge, fluffy and crispy. the fish (you get a choice of different species) is cooked to perfection.

This place is great and worth the money, but even though the fish is probably twice as good and the chip selection thrice as much as a normal fish and chips shop you'll think how did I spend $70 for 4 people.

The gurnard was fresh and perfectly cooked. The batter was light and crispy, and the kumara fries weren't too bad either. Tino, who manned the till, was also friendly and courteous.

The chips at the chippery are the best! Kumara fries are crispy and delicious, the cruly fries had my partner moaning in delight. And the fish isn't bad either 😂
