Delicious, quality Israeli food right in the heart of Whangarei in the most cozy, charming little pedestrian alleyway. I enjoyed my chicken shawarma dinner very much — it was tasty and the portion was hearty for the price. The Israeli coffee was also fantastic and I enjoyed my peppermint tea. The baklava could use a little work — a bit on the dry side and quite dense, it should be sticky and gooey with honey like traditional baklava. The service was a bit lackluster, but overall I liked the food and I’d definitely return the next time I’m in Whangarei.

We stumbled upon this little gem by accident. It was well worth it. The dishes are phenomenal. It gets quite busy and given that it's a wee little place seating can be a mission. Service is great. It's mostly Cafe food but excellent if you want to give Israeli food a taste.

I moved to Whangarei a few months ago, and quickly became a fan of the place. Now I brought the rest of the family. We drove for many hours straight from Wellington. Everyone was hungry. Guess what I fed the family for dinner? Best hummus in the country by the way.

This has now become my favourite middle eastern restaurant (too bad im from out of town)... but the service was great, the setting is adorable, and the food was amazing! We got the Humus&Lamb platter for starters and the Fat Camel Special Plate between the two of us - and so glad we took the waiter's advice cuz that was more than enough, the portions were big! And price wise such a good eat! Highly recommend this place.

This café is a go-to favourite of ours, and has been since we visited Whangārei before we moved up here. There is an extensive menu and also a chiller cabinet with salad items. There menu features dishes with hummus, pitta bread and falafels with many labelled options for vegetarians and vegans. The service is great, Idan remembers his customers and the whole team are really good. It is an Israeli café so the food is Middle Eastern themed, as well as the café itself being laid out like you might find in Tel Aviv or similar. There is covered seating outside as well as inside seating. The coffee and other hot drinks are always excellent, with a camel dusted onto the top of your chai latte to remind you where you are! I would highly recommend stopping here for food and drink, as well as people watching in Quality Street.

This place has a "hype" about it, I was pleasantly surprised that it pulled through. Very busy but the staff were friendly and efficient. Kinda pricey but portions are slightly bigger than expected and extremely well made. Pickled and seasoned with herds and spices rather than the standard plain slices or carrot for example. Would definitely take friends there. I had the chicken pita.

The falafel is amazing. The food was delicious. We had the soup of the day( butternut pumpkin) with bagel. The Fat Camel Starter and The Fat Camel special plate. The pictures are bad. Sorry folks! But trust me delicious. I'm knocking off a star because the bagel wasn't a bagel. It was more like bread shaped into a bagel and they forgot our dolmades on the starter. I literally just realized they forgot it as I was looking at the menu so I could write the dish names down. Anyway, worth a try, especially the falafel and babaganoush.

Friends and I shared the wonderful and very garlicky babaganoush, the dolmades, and the Fat Camel Special Plate. Everything was incredibly delicious, with bright flavours and perfect textures. The general quality and freshness of the food is not lacking, neither is the service. But I'm finding it harder and harder to justify coming to this place recently due to the increased prices, 16 dollars for a pita is just too greedy. When i ask myself if it's worth spending 160 dollars over a few months for just 10 pitas, i tell myself no every time, but there's really no alternative for this type of food in whangarie. I have to wonder if the owners are taking there established relationship with the community for granted, and are just increasing prices without giving much thought to the loyal customer base that have been with them for a long time. Even if the food and service is great, the prices are edging too close to being unfriendly to consumers, especially after the covid lock downs when money is still tight.

We visited the cozy cafe in the heart of Whangarei yesterday and we’re greeted by friendly staff who were helpful explaining some menu items. Portions were large and so flavorful! We shared a chicken shwarma and halloumi salad, both tasted very fresh and were plated beautifully. Would highly recommend the Fat Camel.

This little Cafe has lived upto our expectations and all the reviews posted here. The food is simply delightful. We had a mazze platter and every single item on the plate had strong distinct taste. Hummus and falafel was smooth and fresh. The other thing we had was shakshuk, not the best one I tried so far, but pretty good enough. Also ordered a Knafe which is cheese, rose syrup and pistachio based dessert. I admit I'm not a big fan of cheese, so won't comment on this one. The staff were welcoming and the service was prompt. Totally recommended if you want a piece of Israeli food experience.

They always close early, and often aren't open during their advertised operating hours. We have had a few times where we have called an hour before closing and they have told us that they are closing. We went their recently for takeaway when it was quiet (tables already had their meals) and told it would be ready in 10 minutes. We went back to the car and came back within the 10 minutes; the place had more customers arrive and they were making their food orders instead of ours. Making us wait an extra 15 minutes (25 minutes in total) for two pita while they served others who had come after us. The lamb was dry and stringy, poor quality meat.

The different sauces help to being out a new taste with each bite. They also offer pitas at a reasonable price if you are looking for a smaller meal. The side sauces were something you wouldn't typically find at any middle eastern Israeli place. A favourite among the medical students who frequently dine there, fat camel is an outstanding food joint serving arguably the best babaganoush and falafels in the North Island! Recommend the Camel Kebab Pita, two meat patties, one lamb one beef with a very varied salad all in a pita bread. Great lunch for $13. Feeling adventurous with your coffee? try the Israeli coffee not filtered so comes with bits but uniquely flavoured with cardomom and comes in a neat little jug.
