J.First time surfing, the two Dylans instructed us from beginning to end of our two hour session. They taught us basic skills like standing up on the board, catching a wave, and helped us throughout the session, helping us move deeper into the waters and pushing us along to catch waves when we were too tired to paddle.
During the session they also kept an eye out on the waves and moved us away from the rips. Their ability to maintain composure and impressive physical fitness made me feel comfortable and safe during an exhausting session
Had an amazing experience, and would strongly recommend everyone contemplating their first surfing experience to have it here!

A.I rarely do reviews. Only when I am very pleased with a service or extremely disappointed by one! I want to warmly thank our instructor Dylan who gave me precious advices on how to improve my surfing skills as well as how to "read" the see. I hadn't surfed in 5 years and this session reminded me why I liked surfing before. Dylan is a thoughtful and passionate instructor that will make you progress as well as enjoying safely the moment on the water... And hopefully on the board!
I.I’ve been lucky to do some great surf courses before, but these guys are the best! I was on the advanced beginners course which was twice a week for 5 weeks, and loved it! Great instructors, and lovely blokes to boot! Every one in our group showed huge progress in their technique and the waves we were catching, while having an awesome time doing it. Not enough stars to give when reviewing it!

M.I was a gifted a one-on-one lesson for my birthday and it was by the far the best birthday present ever! My instructor Dylan, was not only super friendly and professional but displayed a wealth of knowledge and experience. Throughout the lesson he gave me really helpful tips to perfect by technique and encouragement when I rode the waves. I left the lesson buzzing and I definitely have the surfing bug. A.Awesome morning weekday surf lesson with Dylan. Dylan was very friendly and knowledgeable. He made sure we caught a ton of unbroken waves and made it fun. The shop had decent Ripcurl wetsuits for rent but we brought our own. My wife and I had a awesome experience at Muriwai Surf Club and have been here a couple of times over the years. Hope to see you guys soon!
M.Had a few private lessons with Dylan after being stuck with progression, he pushed me comfortably out my comfort zone and progressed from white water to out the back on unbroken waves. His knowledge and teaching is on point. So stoked my surfings where it’s at due to him and the lessons!

K.Not enough stars to rate how awesome the 5-weeks Advanced Beginner course was! The crew was amazing, from making us feel safe in the ocean to boosting our confidence, sharing so much knowledge and really getting our skill levels up. I’m so impressed how much each of us has learnt and progressed while having such a great time. Exceeded my expectations by far and so stoked with the waves we’re able to surf during and especially by the end of it! Having the consistency and experiencing different surf conditions really helped me feel much more confident when going out now. Hands down, would highly recommend this course to anyone who’s keen to step their surfing up a nudge or two. Thanks heaps again guys!
A.Great surf school, knowledgeable and focused on safe surfing. Have had several lessons so far and progress each lesson . They tailor lessons to suit your skill level and ensure your always learning. And they make sure your having fun along the way.
E.I've just finished up a five week Advanced Beginner Programme. My confidence and strength improved beyond recognition. I was catching waves consistently and more than that it was always done with a smile. The instructors are fun and knowledgeable, they will push you and take you out of your comfort zone but never too far. I can't wait to do another course with them.
K.So easy to book online and when I needed to change the day and time they were very happy to accommodate us. Marcus is an incredible fountain (ocean?) of knowledge! We learned so much about reading the waves and seeing where is a good place to go in.
I'd be having problems standing up after popping up - Marcus pointed out what I was doing wrong in about 2 seconds then it was just a case of practice. My partner has been surfing for a couple of years and he was given some great pointers on how to level up.
We're going to book more lessons!
B.Did a 5 week, group advanced-beginner class in January. 100% the coolest thing I did this summer! The instructors (Dylan and Marty) were fantastic, knowledgable and made each session a heap of fun.
They pushed us (sometimes literally) when we needed it, and joined us celebrating our wins and unpacking our mistakes.
Our group of 10 made big improvements technically over the 5 weeks but the best thing we all walked away with was the confidence in handling ourselves in that often wild Muriwai surf!
Hugely recommended, wether it's a 5 week course, a 1-1 or just a board hire. The gang at Muriwai surf school are a bunch of legends 🏄
T.had a great 1:1 lesson with Dylan. After a few years of not being on my board at all, and never really progressing that well back when I was trying to surf, he had me up and riding unbroken waves within an hour. Such a good time and has inspired me to keep it up.

They encouraged me to push myself but in a calm and safe environment and I've learned soooo much. K.Do it!🤙 I’m blown away by how much I’ve progressed in the Advanced Beginner course. From being happy enough to play in the white water, to actively getting out the back & hunting green waves. I feel so much more confident on my board, and reading the ocean. The whole staff/crew had great banter, amazing knowledge, and excellent safety skills. And Moon the doggo is a bonus! 🦊I used a bunch of different boards from the school during the 10-lesson course, and fine-tuned what board works best for my level now, and what’ll fit in with the style of surfing I aspire to do. L.I've never surfed a day in my life and was lucky enough to have Dylan try and teach me the art of surfing! So patient and very instructive while in the water and was able to get up and catch a few waves! Everyone at Muriwai Surf School were very friendly and helful! Definitely recommend them if you're looking for a surf school!

M.I wanted to say how good Dylan was at Muriwai surf school! We had only done two lessons in the last 15 years so we’re complete beginners, after one lesson with Dylan we both stood up on the board multiple times! We are hooked! If you want to try surfing you are in great hands with Dylan, he has a way of just tweaking small actions you make and by the end of the lesson you are miles ahead of where you were 2 hours ago. I highly recommend! Thanks for a great morning out! We will be back!

S.Best place to go for lessons, renting or advise. The family is really kind and always happy to help. Lessons are great, beginner and intermediate both really helpful and I received lots of tips and good feedback. Safety is always first but fun is second! Would recommend everyone to go there (and buy an amazing shirt) and would love to go there soon again too! 😊 Muriwai is an amazing place for surfing 👌

k.I've just finished the advance beginners course and would highly recommend it. Dylan and Cam were awesome instructors. So much fun and great advice tailoured to each individual. An all around course with a wide variety of content. From how to wax your new board, how to read a surf report, understand waves, lots of local knowledge even some video analysis, wide range of boards to try. All topped of with fantastic service from the whole team.
e.Muriwai Surf School is a family run surf school and that is exactly how they make you feel, like one of the family. They truly make you feel safe, confident and welcome from arrival at the Surf shed to your experience in the water. Both Dylan and Martin genuinely lead every session with passion and enjoyment and support you to meet your aspirations whatever they may be with care. They live, breath and love what they do and that passion is contagious! I have done both one on one sessions and the advanced beginner program and I have loved every moment. Even when I am out surfing myself I can always hear a lesson going on with Dylan and Martin cheering on the people in their session, its awesome, everyone has so much fun!
As some one that works in sport I do sometimes have super high expectations and this surf school always meets them, the family are genuine kind people and they are the heart of Muriwai beach. Couldn't recommend more, easily the best surf school in NZ.

I’m a 31 year old Samoan (not young and not small in size lol) beginner and was excited about taking my first surf lesson but also nervous because it was something totally new for me. Dylan made the lesson fun and is such a great teacher! Nerves did not last long thanks to Dylan’s teaching approach and knowledge. M.I got the 3 lesson package deal and had all of my lessons with Dylan. Really good instructor - professional and fun. I managed to be standing and surfing slightly bigger waves and even caught an unbroken wave by the end of the 3 lessons. I had lots of scheduling difficulties and they were very accommodating to my booking changes. Wet suits and boards included in the lesson price.
J.10 friends ( 5 couples) all age 60 - 70, hired 4 Blokarts last Saturday and had a fabulous time. Marty was an awesome instructor and after a few simple instructions, he quickly had us blasting up and down the sand. Easy to use, and a heap of fun. We took turns, everyone had a go. We only booked for an hour, and that was plenty of time. Thoroughly recommend Muriwai Surf School and the Blokarts.
R.What can I say? Muriwai Surf School is the perfect place to learn to surf! I was a complete newbie and booked on to the three lesson beginner package. Equipment was great, communication was easy and the people were professional and friendly. I stayed at the Muriwai campground - a two minute walk from the school. Easy peasy.
I was up and away on day one and after my final lesson I had the skills, knowledge and confidence to go surfing by myself. Martin is a top teacher. But more than all that, there is just such a good vibe to the people and the place. Big smiles all round :)
D.Tried to learn 35 years ago but didn't get any formal instruction. Wanted to surf ever since. Discovered these guys. It was on. So me & my 10 year old headed out. Great little team. Really helpful & friendly. Good clear instructions. The right equipment for us kooks. In the water Mr 10 year old was well looked after by the team & was up on his board straight away. I took a bit longer but got the hot tip & managed to actually stand up & ride a few in. And it was totally amazing!! Thank you so much guys. We'll be back for more. Keen to progress.

At first we were worried about the strength of the water but very quickly felt safe and comfortable with our instructor. He was kind and helpful. We are very happy with the progress we made. A.Had my first Lesson a few weeks ago so sorry for just getting around to reviewing now! I was completely new to surfing but all the staff are so lovely and made us feel so welcome! I wasn’t too sure about fitting into a wetsuit but Grace was amazing at sizing me up and it fit perfectly! Mushroom head was such an awesome coach and so enthusiastic!
I recommend Muriwai Surf School to everyone. Surfing can be for all shapes and sizes!!!!

D.An amazing unforgettable experience! If your keen to learn about surfing this lesson is a one stop shop. You get to learn about the wetsuit, the board, the waves, surf safety and of course how to surf! I’ve had two lessons in the last 3 days with Izzy and Dylan and they both explained the ins and outs of surfing so well that I managed to get up and ride the waves in! Feeling super confident now. And by wearing a wetsuit I didn’t feel the cold at all so will definitely be coming back when I can for another surf even though it’s almost winter 🌊

H.We had the best time at the surf school! They're all very nice and listening, and our instructor Antoine was the best. It was our first time and he made sure to be there for us to help take the wave and also gave us plenty of room and time to try at our own pace. Even when we failed, he always cheered. He's very encouraging and smiling!

D.I highly recommend the Muriwai Surf School. They are very easy to deal with. I really recommend Dillon as a surf instructor. He took me out into the waves, explained what to do clearly, and was there all along, and it made it real fun, and I felt like I was improving because of his good instructing. I feel more than confident to continue with my surfing after the lessons.
A.I took a group course where I found myself alone with Charlotte who was also French like me, I couldn't have been better!
Charlotte was a great teacher and helped me take my first standing waves, she gave me advice and corrected on each wave which made me much progress in just one course.
At the end of the course I was able to surf on waves for ten seconds it was great!
I recommend this club as well as Charlotte who was top!
L.I did an intermediate lesson today and all of us progressed a lot. Dylan was such an awesome coach and asked us at the beginning what we want to improve so he made sure that each of us reached our goals. He answered all our questions and gave us very valuable advice. The whole team is amazing, very friendly and helpful! I highly recommend them not just if you wanna start surfing but also if you want to further progress on intermediate level!

L.I can't recommend these guys enough if you want to learn to surf or improve your confidence and skills in the water. I have just finished the 5 week advanced beginners course and loved it!! I was feeling nervous getting back into surfing after recently having a baby but this has provided me with the little push I needed and I can now turn on waves (finally!!) and have faced my fears with paddling out deeper. Dylan was a great teacher, kind and patient, and shared so much invaluable Muriwai knowledge. Antoine was also a great support in the water and photographer! Thanks so much guys!!

Always felt safe, able to ask anything, and learnt not just technical surfing skills, but loads of advice on conditions, reading surf reports, and general safety.
Loved jumping off the rocks to surf, trying out all kinds of conditions each week and getting lots of feedback in the water. Overall it was such a welcome feeling to head out with the team. I'm so much more confident after the course and it's brought back my joy of surfing! Can't wait for more lessons.

Despite this being our first time we felt really comfortable and even managed to stand up! Muriwai beach is also beautiful, whatever the weather! Definitely recommend and hopefully we'll be back!

Awesome and friendly coaches (shout out Craig and Tristan). They were very safety conscious (we got a briefing at the start on how to spot rip tides etc). They kept an eye on us the whole time and were able to give us good tips on how to improve, as well as pushing us onto waves.
They gave us lots of good advice on what kit to buy, how to surf safely on our own etc.

V.WOW!!! What a great experience!!! Martin (owner) was great right from the beginning on the phone to in person at the beach! This was our very first experience surfing and my 17yr old son Josh along with my husband and myself LOVED the exhilarating experience. Jeremy was our surf instructor and let me just say he's TOP SHELP material!! He really knows his stuff, made us feel confident in our abilities and kept us safe at all times. It was SO MUCH FUN!!! Will DEFINITELY be returning and recommending this school and Jeremy to EVERYONE we come across. Thank you for such a fun afternoon!!!
J.Adam was an excellent teacher who has a keen eye for detail and helped to point out areas that needed improvement. With his help I nailed the “pop up” on my first lesson. I am told all the surfing trainers are equally professional and would highly recommend a one-on-one class for a first or second surfing attempt. All equipment is supplied and the shop is only a very short walk to the beach. The beach itself is beautiful, large, flat and QUIET. Highly recommended surf school and great location. I should also mention that the owner of the shop Martin is a very friendly chap.
J.I rented out a board and wetsuit for about 2 weeks and Dylan was able to get all the right gear for me with the type of experience I had. He was awesome and he even remembered that I was going back home to Canada the following day! Dylan also gave me some wax, a surf guide on all the beach and a scrapper! Absolutely great, would recommend to anyone that wants to hire a board and/or wetsuit.

But, one of old coach said ''I don't want to come to you to save you when you are far away from group" when I surfed. A.Amazing! Private sessions are the best and I recommend it especially if you want to learn safely how to jump off the rocks and improving your skills. The staff is supportive and friendly, the choice of boards is crazy... definitely worth it for someone who wants to get a safe ride.

R.I'm a beginner-intermediate surfer, and took half a dozen lessons over a few weeks. The coaches (esp. Martin) were incredibly helpful and supportive. They listened closely and observed closely, and structured the lessons according to what I needed to progress. I saw a tremendous improvement, from struggling to catch whitewater to trimming on faces. Somehow I'm even more stoked on surfing than I was before the lessons!
