I took both kids 11 and 7 and they had a ball.
Our girl Sophie who is 11 wasn't to keen to start but by the end of the ride didn't want to get off of Prickels as he took great care of her.
Scott 7 was having a great time on his horse Calusa they could have ridden all day together as she also took great care of Scott.
I had a great time also with being a little more experienced and got to have a wee hoon at the back on the little mare Cochesa who had a great nature.
Will definitely have to go back again.

I took my youngest son, who loved every minute of it, his horse Pawnee, the landscape and Debs’s awesome banter. We are booked in for another ride very soon.

K.Best horse trek I've ever done. Debs is both delightful and highly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in her area, and her horses are alert, responsive, and exceptionally well cared for. In our two-hour ride, Debs catered for both myself (intermediate/learner) and my daughter (experienced rider), giving us both an opportunity to enjoy the ride (and exquisite views) at a fun and comfortable pace. Highly, highly recommend this activity if you're in the area.
C.Our horse trek was absolutely fabulous. This is one of the activities we did as part of our school camp in Central Otago and I cannot speak highly enough of Debs. She is so reassuring and calm, especially with our students (and staff!) who were first-timers or hadn't been riding for a while. Scenery was spectacular, horses were wonderful and each was matched in size and character perfectly!! A.Loved our trail ride with these guys. Our guide was so lovely, very informative about the area and our horses. I rode Cheyenne and my sister rode Dawn. They are amazing at making sure you know the personality of your horse and making sure that you are comfortable all the way along. The views are breathtaking and they make sure to stop so they can take photos for you. Plenty of opportunities for photos ops amongst the beautiful landscape. 10/10 would ride again. I would definitely recommend this to anyone I know travelling to this area. Such good value and an experience to remember.

E.Wonderful and unique experience, it was a 2 hour ride, horses were trained but we need to adjust a bit if the horsy was too fast/slow/away from the line. We climbed up and down the hills to see amazing scenery, also crossed the mini river to let horses drink water. Really good experience and recommend it to everyone.

- Deb (the owner) is very warm and she made us feel very comfortable riding the horses although we are the first timer. She guided us through the trail with amazing Central Otago backcountry trail. We were riding through stream, farmland and small bushes. Deb was offering to take lots of photos for us and airdrop the photos to us after the ride. It was really convenient. In the end, we get the feed the horses too.

K.This was an absolutely brilliant day out! I had never ridden a horse before, but felt totally assured and in good hands. Great and easy to follow instructions were given beforehand, then guidance throughout the trek. Gorgeous horses and amazing views. This is a must-do activity to get a relaxed view of the surrounding country.

K.We had a great time riding with Backcountry Saddles. Everything was set up and ready to go. The trail was fantastic and the horses very well trained (for the most part 😉). They give you great views and the 2 hours was a perfect amount of time. Don't know that my knees could have lasted any longer. Oh and they teach you to trot, I've never had that in a beginner trail ride before. Lots of fun?

the team here know exactly what to do and are very experienced with the horses. These horses are gentle and well trained and they are very orderly and puts people like us first timers totally at ease. My wife and my 2 young kids totally enjoyed the ride. Cardrona is a lovely place too and the best way to enjoy this nature scene is on a horseback!
1 advise for riders, wear your longs, long sleeves and long pants, possibly gloves and socks too as the horses might bring you thru some thorny bushes and you do not want to get pricked. but not a big issue, just a small advise that will make the trip more enjoyable than it already is.

Debs has created an experience that is second to none. A wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of the area on horses that confident in their step and a joy to ride. Along with this you also get Debs indepth knowledge of the area and the surrounding wildlife. She assesses and instructs on your own capabilities, ensuring you get the very most out of your trek. There is the opportunity to up the pace if your keen and able.
If you are visiting the area this is a must do and I know I'll definitely return when we revisit the area.
E.Very impressed with the horses as they were calm and well trained. The terrain can be rather muddy and we passed through a few streams. The view was beautiful and magnificent. Very enjoyable 2 hrs trail, suitable for first timers.

J.Can't recommend highly enough. If there is one place to go horse riding, this is it.
The south island is spectacular and you could provide a riding experience with most high country land however what Debs does so much more than that. Her knowledge of the land that she shares is thorough and you learn about all sorts of wildlife that you never knew we had in NZ. The horses are trained incredibly well and seem happy to be there. The equipment is looked after and the coaching on how best to use it continues throughout the ride. Deb embodies the gold standard of what what tourism in NZ should aspire to. If you get a chance to go for a ride with Deb, clear your schedule and do this!
A.I did this trek with my 10yr old niece who is a novice/int rider. Deb's chose the perfect horse for her, obliging, patient, and respectful. Debs let us wait in appropriate places so we could have a canter which we really appreciated. The secenery was beautiful, as were the horses, and the new location for Backcountry Saddle Expeditions is amazing. Great job Deb's, your the host with the most.
L.Amazing horse trek with lovely well mannered horses. Scenery is next level and you feel like you could be riding in an old Western film up in the mountains. Debs is super friendly, knowledgeable and has an obvious passion & love for what she does. Highly recommended for all levels of riders. As an experienced rider I was given lots of opportunities to have a canter/gallop catching up along the trails and my horse was super relaxed about doing this. One of the best treks I’ve done. 🐴
N.I'm writing this review 5 years after our visit to NZ and our experience here - but that should stand as a testament to how memorable and enjoyable our ride was. Impressive views, sweet animals, friendly conversation and forever an experience I'll never forget. We'd love to come back and ride again one day.

The horses are all beautiful and well looked after, the scenery is also stunning. I had done a little bit of riding before so they put me on a horse with a bit more pep, but I never once felt unsafe! Did a great job matching horses to people and of supporting everyone the ride was full of amazing scenery and was really good value. The drive over from Queenstown was super scenic.

D.Two riders with varying skill levels went on the trek with Deb, she matched the horses to the riders, making both safe and comfortable. The trek was over various types of Central Otago terrain, and for those wanting and capable there was the opportunity to extend the paces. The views were amazing, Deb was able to fill in with history of the area. For us, this was a ‘bucketlist’ item, we enjoyed it so much will most definately be back next time in the region. For experienced riders, do go, there is still enough of a challenge of the terrain to enjoy, for the less experienced, you will be safe.

Our horses were all super well trained - like on “automatic”. Every country, no matter the weather.
Well, this was the best ride I have ever been on in my life.
The horse was so soft mouthed and responsive to small cues, I felt completely safe the entire time and really trusted my horse.
It hailed, rained, snowed and the sun shone all within the two hour ride but the horses took it like champions and were so sure footed the entire time.
They provided boots, helmets, Driza-bones, socks - everything we could possibly need!
The only thing I could comment on is that the guide wasn't wearing a helmet. No matter how good of a horseman you are, accidents can happen. I think we should set a good example for young riders by always wearing appropriate safety gear. :)
C.This was one of the best horseback rides I've ever had!! The best way to see New Zealand is from on top of a mountain on a horse! We got to trot and even Cantor! Great friendly people work there and they truly love the horses. Would highly recommend to anyone! Our horses Bitty, Prickles, and Navada were wonderful as well as our guide Philippe!
N.Brilliant experience with the lovely folk at Backcountry Saddle. My husband and I are beginners but we were put completely at ease. Horses are so well behaved (we loved Calloosa and Pawnee!), but we were taught basic handling and also to trot. Apart from this, the view was incredible. G.This has been my favourite part of my travels around New Zealand. The team were amazing at everything! They were very informative and supportive and fun. And the horses were BEAUTIFUL and so gentle, each of them had their own personality which was nice. We were given the opportunity to ride faster if we wanted and got to experience different types of terrain, whilst learning about the surrounding area and the history. It was authentic and such good value for money! I hope to come back again soon as I had the most wonderful day and would seriously recommend this to anyone visiting new zealand :-)
V.Super impressed. ! We own horses ourselves, so to see how we behaved and calm these horse were was awesome! We took our 5 yr old son on his first horse ride, he was super chuffed! The grin on his face lasted all day. I want to thank the lovely women running this bizzo once again for our sons first experience a fantastic, fun and safe one! Hubby and i thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as well. Our guide made it so the more experienced could get their thrill out of it too! The sights are unforgettable 😍

V.Highly recommend that you put Backcountry Saddle Expeditions on your list of things to do when in Wanaka / Queenstown. My 14 year old daughter went on a ride on her own in a group this afternoon and loved it. She was able to take some great photos and enjoyed meeting the other riders. Debs was professional, welcoming and down to earth. Her helper was amazing also. This company caters for all experience levels with riders. A cute cottage with a warm fire waits inside. If you’re dropping a rider off, go and check out the Cardrona hotel or stop for lunch in Wanaka before heading back to collect your rider. Looking forward to doing this ride with my husband next trip.
A.Definitely one of the highlights of our month in New Zealand. We had a great time riding through the stunning scenery. Debs shared a lot of knowledge about the area and helped us feel comfortable and get to know our horses (neither of us had ridden in over 15 years). R.It was one of the best experiences in NZ, and the best horse experience I have had. Debs and the team are fantastic, with indepth description of what to do. They are very proffesional and great at spotting how much you can do. I got to canter, for the first time, (I have tried riding about 5 times in the past 10 years) and it was really amazing.
And then the Cardrona valley is just stunning.

S.There was lots of very cute horses who live out on a huge paddock, which is so good to see! The owner really looks after them and the guide Rosie was lovely! The track just makes you feel like you're in the Wild West :)
J.Lots of laugh and jest, a few trots (only when the horses would let you! To be fair they are hard workers), superb landscape and view of the surroundings (between Queenstown and Wanaka incl. the Crown Range summit). J.Went this place with my 3 kids. It was about 45mins drive from Queenstown. The staffs were very kind & the trekking with horse riding was very fun. The scene was beautiful. The price was also very reasonable (95 NZD per adult for 2.5 hours trekking). I highly recommend this place for a horse riding experience.

I.(Translated) This horseback ride is about 20 minutes away from Wanaka, and it takes about half an hour to arrive. It's near the Cardrona bra wall.
The cost is not expensive. The whole horse riding trip is about two hours. The two staff members (led by Fran) are very professional and kind. They will tell us the habits of each horse and give us encouragement and help in a timely manner.
This trip is not like a horse riding activity in an amusement park, but it can really ride a horse to trot in the mountains and grasslands; this time the ride is called Poggle, it is a super smart and cute horse <3
Cardrona's scenery is very beautiful, the whole trip is very happy and enjoyable, even children can experience it together (but you need to confirm with them in advance), if you come to Wanaka or Queenstown, it will definitely be pushed, I will certainly Come again :)
p.s. If you come to experience remember to wear trousers, otherwise the grass on the roadside may stab you.
