Reviews of Countdown Cable Car Lane
E.
Nice supermarket at a great location. Variety is great there is everything you need for your weekly shopping. Prices are modarate. Also its a very clean supermarket.
A.
Great little supermarket. Good selection and relatively good prices. Also in a very convenient location!
D.
This store is a awesome metro store with a great team in it specially like deli sandwiches, bakery sweats ,the cheap water melons
H.
Convenient location and clean store with good, helpful staff.
I would not recommend it as a place to buy good fresh fruit and vegetables, as the quality and freshness often leaves a lot to be desired (think limp celery, very bruised zucchini). Good in a pinch - but better quality produce at other stores.
Unfortunately, due to size, it also has a rather limited selection and depending on what day of the week you go you may find under-stocked selections like bread and eggs. Also appears to simply not stock certain items like a better range of quick meal sauces, or bulk items like table salt or barley. This means you do not get the same variety or savings. It's due to the small size of the store, and the ordering decisions made by the bosses in Auckland. But for most basics and for a last minute dinner decision - it's very convenient.
P.
Quiet surprised to find a well stocked and spacious grocery store in the middle of Wellington.
Fairly spacious and well stocked single level store.
Well staffed. Has manned checkouts and also self service checkouts.
Cash and credit card accepted.
Public and disabled toilets / rest rooms located inside. Is a wheel chair friendly facility. Has free WIFI.
C.
Very handy supermarket in the heart of Wellington business district. Not overly big but has everything you might need.
L.
Great little ride up and back again. Had a look around the cable car museum. There is the option to wander back down via the Botanic gardens.
Return trip for an adult is $7:50 at the time of review (January 2018) and one way ride costs $4:00
M.
Cool. Fun experience. Shorter than I might have expected but the views are magnificent and the botanical gardens are worth a walk
M.
Convenient location to make a quick stop to get your groceries. The bus stop is just a couple of doors away which is very useful.
P.
Good place to get groceries. Part of the Countdown supermarket chain. Can get busy during the working week. The shop is not a full size supermarket so isles are narrow. Lots of self check out kiosks to aid in getting people out quickly. Good for a quick supermarket shop with a basket. Good choice if you want some groceries and you are in town. Prices are comparable to other supermarkets. Have all food goods you need. Would go to another supermarket in the suburb's for a large grocery shop though.
B.
Great view from the top and although the trip on the cable car is short it's quite fun. Definitely take a walk around at the top. Nice gardens.
E.
Should number the aisles so you can better find things
P.
Nice clean and convenient supermarket in the CBD, great to grab a few groceries on the way home... good variety of ready made meals when you don't fancy cooking, cheers
C.
Don't let the size of this Countdown fool you as it has everything you need. All those little last minute things you have on your dinner list. Pop in and grab them on the way home
M.
Very very busy (visited at 5pm rush time), but all checkouts were open & customers were being served quickly & efficiently.
M.
Best little supermarket in the CBD. Great friendly and knowledgeable service. I can get the majority of my needs here. Let's support them by wearing face masks during COVID-19.
H.
Very convenient for those people working in Wellington's CBD, it orovides a good range of grocery products at reasonable prices. There are lots of self checkouts so you don't have to wait long in line. Also provide freshly baked and prepared food if you are looking for an alternative lunch option.
C.
Too bad, they're closed today at 01-01-2018
maybe because it's public holiday
Try again tomorrow
G.
It's a metro supermarket, clean and with a lot of things packed into a compact space, it's going to cost significantly more than a suburban supermarket. There is fresh food, but the focus is more on pre packages items. The bakery is pretty good, and the staff are friendly, and they get through a ridiculous number of people at peak times, waiting in a queue is usually very short, sometimes up to ten minutes.
E.
Average small countdown. Clean, aisles could be better organized. Not too busy when I visited on a weekday mid morning.
S.
Very limited range of fresh produce, most of which don’t look very fresh. Prices are also higher than non-Metro Countdown supermarkets. I prefer the New World down the road.
M.
This small but strategically-located supermarket offers a good alternative to the many cafes and restaurants in the vicinity by stocking a decent variety of hot and cold, lunch foods which are competitively priced. Their staff deserves mention because they are alert, courteous (most of the time) and efficient in maintaining a smooth flow through the checkouts despite the very long queues at peak times.
S.
Great little supermarket, good layout, and excellent location.
Reasonably well-stocked, but won't have all of the items available, being a compact shop. Decent hot food, deli, and bakery selection 🍗🍕🍞
But the self-checkout machines can be a bit temperamental and rude, though it might just be to me.... 😦
G.
Great for convenience, but often missing a lot of essentials. It's also very busy during lunch hours and in the early evening, so if you want anything more than some snacks or your basic milk and bread, you'd be better heading to the New World around the corner.
A.
I always do grocery shopping here as it's the closest place for me to shop at. The staff are very friendly, and will help you with a smile. As they are serving you they will strike up a friendly little conversation, and that's what I always look for when shopping.
m.
Little CBD convenience Countdown. Of course being boutique it does suffer from some lack of choice. Great for when you forget that simple ingredient or need a bottle of milk. Has a reasonable liquor selection for your night out.
T.
I always like to go to countdown. Fresh and quite cheap food, beverage and other stuff. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Very rare to see the store dirty. Most of the time very clean.
The bakery has some real good stuff.
J.
Very small and limited stock options. Can be well suited for a quick shop on the way past if they have what you are after.
H.
Always busy and crowded but it is a relatively large store in cbd. Food to go options available as well for busy workers and students. Closer to closing time they do bargain sales on near-end best before date foods - mostly instant sandwiches. Service is average and the queue can get long in busy times, which i think is basically almost 80 percent of the time due to the location. But overall good provision of foodies and goodies and service in the middle of the city centre.
J.
Countdown sells great beer. Hot tip: got an AA membership card? Turns out that it's also a countdown rewards card, so use it to buy the bet on discount.
Great place for beer and food, but there's always a homeless guy out the front who makes you feel bad for having a job, income and a future...
A.
Has everything you need. Convenient for people getting groceries on their way home, or any part of the day for that matter. Some people think it’s over priced but it’s really no different to some other countdowns. Everything is always very neat and shelf’s are stocked up.
R.
Good size grocery most essentials are present, best for travellers buying food stuffs and drinks.
D.
Good place and space to shop. Check out a staff looking after the 'auto checkouts' need to be more aware of the rush hour crowds. Keep looking out for empty scanners to keep the flow moving and direct custom.
D.
Authentic experience. Saves a lot of time, goes up to the museum and solar planetarium.
A.
Great place to come for groceries and a lot cheaper than New World!
There's a great choice here!
It's hard to describe, but it just feel pretty fancy here, which is surprising but it's definitely well worth doing your weekly shop here as you'll save tons.
F.
Bought every item I needed counter staff was awesome
J.
A good supermarket at Lambton Quay where you can get daily needs such as food, drink, wine, fresh vegetables, meat and fruits. Friendly and helpful employees. Although the supermarket is good, it is worth only 4 stars as the choices of goods are limited.
P.
Excellent location in the CBD. Very handy just pop out of work to buy lunch. Not much selections of bread to choose from. I couldn't find my usual yoghurt but overall I'm so glad to have Countdown in the city.
L.
We were very grateful for this store being in the heart of the CBD when we stayed at Park Hotel Lambton Quay recently on our Wellington Holiday. Not only did it have all the grocery items we needed but also had fresh sandwiches, sushi, some hot food like pies and quiche as well as hot chicken and a bakery. They also sell alcohol - hot and cold at this store. And it was opened till 10pm at night. So if we weren't sure what we wanted to eat after sightseeing we could always find something here. And right next to the Cable Car too.
J.
Expect a 'metro' sized supermarket. Most of the items you can get at a 'full sized' supermarket are here, including a basic range of meat, fruit and veg. Beer and wine available too. No trolleys; you'd only shop to grab a few bags of items here. Plenty of self-serve checkouts and attended express checkouts. It does get busy during 5pm - 6pm, the aisles get tight, but customers flow quickly, you don't typically queue for long. Staff are attentive with self-serve machine problems. Close to major bus routes and the Cable Car.
j.
location is right in the city central. very accessible. While you may not find each and every thing on your list (smaller size compared to other locations) yet many of the regular items and fruits and veggies can be purchased.
A.
A small and compact supermarket in the business area. The layout is ok and much easier to navigate and easier to your brain than New World's. Price is more competitive and most of their produce are quite fresh. The checkout queue lines are a bit confusing and if you come from the wrong angle, you won't be able to notice nor read the signs for the queue line; so, here it is: left one is for assisted check-out, and the right one is for self-check-out. Get to the wrong lane, and you'll block everyone in that lane.
P.
Good staff and selection, but typical Count Down over price and same selection in every store. They're free fruit for kids is a fantastic idea (when it's stocked anyway).
A.
Very convenient to access from the cable car. Surprisingly large range at no apparent extra cost for a metro supermarket. Good place in the central city as there's a large supply of carparks around, as well as easy access to both lambton quay bus stops, and ~5 mins walk to the train station.
B.
Nice and quick shopping at Countdown and great cheap deals on offer. Also right next to the Cable Car which is really good transport, especially if you have a lot of groceries or if you just want to sit down and go through a few lit up tunnels :) (Also quite cheap transport)
K.
Best place to shop for groceries in CBD. So many self help terminals even when it's very busy at lunchtime it only takes a few minutes to get through the checkout.
p.
Smaller sized store but still crams in a good range of goods. Most items for sale obviously geared towards convenience purchases and lunches, not for a weekly shop! Tons of self check outs and tellers.
T.
A place i can go to any time of the day. Whether its to quickly grab something for breakfast, or a warm meal for dinner. Fully stocked and very clean. Never had any problems here and will continue to use Countdown on Lambton for as long as it exists.
H.
Despite being small in size this supermarket had everything I needed to make a light dinner I could eat in my hotel room
K.
Was organized, but smaller than I expected. During high season I was there but some items like steak was shortage.
H.
It was difficult to find but eventually we found it.
O.
Impeccably located, reasonably large, enough self-service checkouts to put as many students out of minimum wage jobs as it conveniences in its low low prices, and a proud supporter of PayWave. If only they had Vanilla Coke Zero.
K.
Staff are always friendly and helpful. Good variety for an inner city store, usually well stocked as well. Great bakery and pre-made food department as well.
R.
Handy. Tidy. Good staff. Nice wine selection and meats. Can be very busy around lunchtime so be prepared for a short wait around that time of day (Mon-Fri).
H.
Complete lack of bread on a Friday morning.. Couldn't feed the pigeons their ciabatta they have been craving. I've never been so disappointed... 5 stars
J.
Not a great selection of 'lunch' food. I was there on a Saturday so perhaps it's better on weekdays? The store is well presented and laid out with efficient checkout process.
k.
Good for getting a couple of quick things. Mainly aimed at people in offices getting some lunch or some nibbles, or grabbing something easy on the way home from work rather than if you want a complete shop
V.
Much like other metro sized supermarkets, but with half the stock and double the usual prices.
B.
Awesome shop I love coming in here things are always busy and buzzing yes it is tight due to being a Metro however they have pulled off a great shop and the deli was my favorite with the energetic team serving from a Beautiful case it all added up to an overall awesome shopping experience Thanks Team at CD Cable Car Lane keep it up!!
k.
Small store that doesn't quite have everything you need but friendly staff and good layout.
P.
Newly opened metro supermarket. Great auto check out facilities. Good range of produce. Staff are friendly even late at night. Good craft beer range.
K.
Just nice location at the cable car lane. For a quick grab of your needs around the CBD. Nice small and neat store.
A.
Always good. Excellent Staff and Supplies for City living.
R.
Super convenient but a really limited range. It's slim pickings for Snapper recharges around Lambton Quay, but these guys have you covered with a self service kiosk up front.
P.
Nice morning out, very handy to visit the Botanical gardens, planetarium and of course the cozy Cable car museum. Excellent views and great coffees at the Cable car eatery on top
R.
Brilliant lunch time food small but seems to have everything
B.
Good "little" shop in the middle of the town. It's busy most of the time, which speakes for itself in regard to pricing, service and what's on offer. Cool little organic section within the shop.
M.
Reasonable price and very handy. Easy self service too
T.
Great little supermarket that stocks everything you could need. Good bakery section and plenty of choice on the veg side of things. Very centrally located.
A.
Great place for shopping while staying in the CBD. We stayed at the Novatel and was awesome having it just at the bottom of our lift to lambton quay. Prices the same as any countdown.
M.
Super limited freezer space mostly taken up by beer fridges which is disappointing. Otherwise a good shop when your in town and need something and don't need specific items.
G.
Convenient location, but smaller than the New World metro and so lacks a number of key items. Greater number of self checkouts however.
T.
Convenient. They offer excellent sandwiches. I often buy them for lunch. They also sell my favourite jelly bean tomatoes.
S.
Great little ride up to the top of wellin9. Cafe at the top and a nice park to walk around. A short ride though, only a few minutes. 100% worth it.
Z.
Inner city supermarket, limited product selection due to space restrictions, handy location makes up for this. Good staffing levels appreciated at busy times
A.
Staff were awesomeness to the max when I had massive dizzy spells. They gave me a seat and called me a taxi. Service was exceptional in every way.
A.
Nice find in the middle.of a busy CBD. Great variety of products.
M.
Great little store. Best prices in Central Wellington. Fantastic service. Great selection. What more would you want?
l.
Neat and tidy has all the groceries that I needed and good fresh produce
I.
Slightly small but still enough for essential items. Clean and tidy!!
I.
very handy when u get booted out of ur friend's hall at 8am and dont have time to get breakfast. the countdown will always be there for you
D.
Great for local shopping and picking up lunch. Not the largest store as it's more metro sized, but a good alternative to going to a cafe to pick up things on the go.
S.
It's a supermarket, it's inoffensive . They will keep packages for you which is going above and beyond, I guess? The staff are always friendly when I have been in.
B.
Super convenient location. Picked up some goodies for snacks and got all we needed. Cheerful service too. Nothing to complain about.
A.
I love shopping here. The prices are generally very good, and the checkout is painless and friendly. The location can't be beaten either.
N.
Good experience because of friendly helpful staff.
Á.
All you might need supermarket, just right next to the cable-car or close to all bus-stops. Both self-service and classic cashier's.
A.
Lost a $20 underneath one of the self checkout machines, friendly staff member moved it for me so I could retrieve it! Thank you!
K.
This is a very handy mini Countdown for those living or staying in the city. Don't expect the full product range or pack sizes but it looks like they have an eye for what's needed.
D.
The self checkouts are hot. I asked one out and we're going to frozen goods on Friday. Can't wait.
G.
Good supermarket, clean & tidy. Had what we wanted,
J.
Was looked after by team member Dragon Sushi sunday morning who made me rice paper rolls fresh as didnt have any in window yet lovely girl deserves 5 star for excellent service cable car lane countdown
M.
Convenient Lambton Quay location for workers in that part of town. Limited options compared to bigger supermarkets but good for smaller shops and for lunches.
J.
Love it great service friendly staff everything I could want and easy to find. It's now my go to supermarket <3 :-)
K.
Smallish but well stocked Countdown, has got everything you might need including ready to eat snacks and beer & wine
N.
Used Alexander Turnbull Library to read an oral history transcript. Thanks to Sarah.
T.
Well located, it's basically ebranded Woolworths (I live in Sydney) so everything is familiar just be aware of rebranding in NZ ;-)
M.
For a small shop in CBD it does its best, and always fast service with plenty of self checkouts, but limited range of some stock.
G.
Standard supermarket in town with a corresponding limited range and no parking. But so convenient and a God send for office workers.
D.
Convenient location in the city centre. Has all your basic supermarket needs but can get very busy at peak times.
N.
It was beautiful I loved it so much I wanted to stay on the cable car forever😊
P.
Great staff, perfect location, good variety and pricing second to none in the business district.
A.
Reasonable product range given it is central city. Helpfull staff and good management of the many shoppers
m.
Very handy to my work. Very small so selection is very limited. I will shop again for convenence. Otherwise it is lackluster.
C.
Would be a 5 but only a 4 star because there isn't much range. The deals are good though!
K.
A great metro grocery with a good selection and fair prices. Not marked up terribly like many urban markets
W.
Good CBD grocery shopping. Good range of product at normal suburban prices. Excellent muffins
P.
Good to see most of the normal Countdown range and prices right in the city
K.
Very handy and very busy, everything you need in the central city.
k.
Convenient. It was looking a bit depleted when I was there - a Tuesday night at about 8 - but fair enough. Much better than a dairy!
M.
Very handy for my quick essential needs
S.
good place in the heart of the CBD and got various options, easy for working people to shop easy
W.
A city store not a full supermarket. Very restricted range. Great for lunch..not great for lunchtime shopping.

S.
Not much variety or cheap prices but it's a well located place to go and have what you need.
