Stray was an optimal choice in picking a tour company for my limited time in the North Island in NZ.
I'm a very heavy traveler at this point having had visited almost 100 different countries and usually, I'm pretty good about getting itineraries and building trips with my eyes closed.
I had started to do that for my 8 days in NZ and kept on coming back to a thought. While I had the means to rent a car or use public and do this all on my own that Stray's price and what they included overall really wasn't that much of a price difference. At that point, it would be me just being stubborn in choosing to tour on my own and Stray's date for the North Island tour linked up perfectly with my fly in/out dates.
The tour of the North Island was excellent - I can't say there were any parts that were less than optimal but I would just say when you visit the Blue Duck to make sure you are armed with the right supplies including alcohol.
I'm somewhat of a foodie so while I can't say the food was at all bad, I like to turn things up on where I eat and was able to do so. There was a lot of space/time to allow me to freestyle and not feel obligated or forced to only do exactly what they want at their exact times. They kept things loose like that and as a freestyler of sorts, I liked that part about the journey with Stray.
Shorty was an excellent guide providing a nice spirit throughout the journey. At no point did I feel that any part of the tour was less than professional but also, Shorty was nice and inclusive trying to make sure everyone had a good time.

I spent 3 and a bit weeks travelling with Stray all throughout the South Island in New Zealand and can honestly say I had one of the best experiences ever. Everyone I met on the buses were so friendly and I loved the flexibility of being able to hop on and hop off the bus at any point when I found a stop that I particularly liked. I thought there was a good mix of 'must do' stops like Queenstown, Mount Cook and Wanaka as well as some smaller stop offs were you could chill out a little more. I think it's perfect for anyone who is travelling solo and want to meet new people.
T.
A bit overpriced for what's included, but definitely a great way to see a load of New Zealand

Stray is for everyone, every age, travelling single, multiple...If you want to relax, enjoy, experience and let the ones who know New Zeeland best show you its beauty, choose Stray, choose an unforgettable journey. Thank you Lego & Stray for being professional & wonderful guides.

I did the North Adventure tour called Beetham.
The tour was amazing, it had more included in it than I was expecting, hardly spent any money, Just a few activities mainly in Rotorua. Our driver Husky was just the right amount of informative and friendly, helping everyone in the group come together. And I’ve met friends for life! DO IT

I had the absolute best three weeks travelling the North Island with Stray on their Jonah Pass. I loved all of the unique and off the beaten path places we went to that I would never have found on my own. My driver guides Thor and Soxx were so fantastic, informative and fun, I just want to do it all over again! Highlights were White Water Rafting in Rotorua and the Tongariro Crossing!

I had an amazing 9 days with Stray exploring the NZ South Island. Shorty was a great guide. The tour was really good to provide a taster of different parts of the country, it may have been better to stay a little longer in many places. I will probably look into the hop on/hop off bus next time, but the journey tour is great for a smaller holiday. Thoroughly recommend!

I used Stray back in the mid 2000’s. The buses didn’t even have logos at the time but it was the most fun I had traveling. Loved every minute of my trip.
I remember the bus breaking down on the way up to Christchurch and everyone hoping a fence to drink and play football in a field. God I miss that time in my life and the people. The people, the drivers, and randomness were amazing. I’d do it again in heartbeat.
K.
A great 5star tour. A friend had recommended it to me and I'm very grateful. I had a blast. The activities are very good in terms of quality and value. All the meals that were provided were very good. The accommodation is varied but of a good standard. Would definately book with Stray again!

I would definitely recommend travelling in NZ with Stray. My boyfriend and I did the Jill and Jack pass in just under three weeks. We wished we had a little more time so we could have stayed longer in some places.
Our driver Cookie was fantastic, as were the places we stayed, activities we did and the friends we made along the way! We only had the time to travel around the North Island and will definitely be using Stray in the future to travel the South Island!

Had the best 3 weeks with Stray journeys doing the north and South Island of New Zealand! Our driver Husky was THE BEST and made the trip! 100% wish I could do these last few weeks again with the amazing group and our amazing driver and guide Husky! :) 10/10

Stray is head and shoulders above the other travel buses available in New Zealand. It’s the will take you to places that none of the other buses go and organise experiences exclusive to you and your bus.
Bus drivers are friendly and helpful and know how to have a good time! I can’t recommend Stray enough to people looking to travel New Zealand who want to experience what it’s really like. Great value for money and brilliant fun.

I travelled throughout the North Island with Stray and have the best time! Stray is absolutely perfect for solo travelers as you make an endless amount of friends while amazing the most beautiful places. I gained so much knowledge about all activites, accommodation and destinations we were going to from the driver guide, who was the nicest person. 10/10 would recommemend to everybody, especially for people who are solo travelling since it can be nerve wrecking - Stray will make your time in New Zealand one of a kind! :)

I am just back from a three week trip with Stray across both most of the North and South Island (Dingle Tour).
I had an absolutely amazing time and I don't regret choosing a Stray Journey instead of the hop on/hop off option as I had limited time and wanted to see as much as I could. It was nice to not have to deal with logistics.
Things I loved:
- Our guides. I had two, Seagull for the North Island, and Shorty for the South Island. Both have different styles but what they had in common was their ability to be informative, safe drivers, organised, and a laugh. I felt very welcomed by them both and they were great at giving you the heads up about good places to check out or reminding you that the next town doesn't have a supermarket so stock up.
- The places we saw were great. My favourites include Hahei, Blue Duck Station, Doubtful Sound, Queenstown, and Kaikoura.
- The activities were great. The guides did a good job of sharing their experience of them, the feedback from other previous passengers, sharing what to expect, the cost, and the logistics
- The group were great. I didn't realise that people would leave and join us at different points, depending on their Stray Journey itinerary, but we'd a good mix of people from 20 - mid 40s over the three weeks. That was great because you met people you normally wouldn't meet.
Things to be aware of:
- The bus we travelled in took 24 people and the leg room was lacking to be fair. There is also no Wi-Fi on the bus which I personally thought was great.
- You will be tired - it's a pretty full on three weeks, so don't be shy to take yourself off when you need time to recharge the batteries.
- There is a lot of driving in the South Island and the last day back to Auckland is killer. I'd really have loved it if they had broken that up into two days.
Much love to the Stray team. I can't wait to return to New Zealand.
K.
I did the Cook journey in October 2019 and it was the best time of my life. Everything was perfectly organised, I didn't have to worry about anything. Nice accomodation, great activities included and probably the best driver guides you could wish for. Great value for money! If you go to New Zealand, make your life easy and choose Stray!
T.
I've travelled both the North and South island with Stray and each trip was fantastic. I was nervous it was just going to be a 'generic backpacker party bus' but it turned out to be a great way to see parts of NZ that I would never have been able to see otherwise (Lake Aniwhenua and Blue Duck Station are NOT to be missed!). I skydived, surfed, went caving, explored glaciers, you name it - the opportunities were endless. The drivers and my fellow passengers were so much fun too. We've had reunions in Sydney and London since finishing the trip which proves that you don't just leave with new friends, you leave with a whole new Stray family!
M.
If you're looking for an active structured tour of New Zealand with a focus on nature, highly recommend doing a 3 week tour with Stray! Did more excellent activities and saw more amazing things on the sheppard trip than I have on most other trips I've done in my life. Also great value for the low cost!
E.
I've been on a 9 days journey with Stray and I really really enjoyed it! I met the best people and we've experienced so many cool things together (we were 11, so it was really personal and we could always laugh and talk on the bus with everyone). I was so happy in this group and also the driver was friendly and funny - it almost felt like a roadtrip with friends. The accommodations were always clean and comfy and even though our driver Husky might have been a bit stressed sometimes, it didn't influence us and everything seemed very relaxed. Our acitivities were well organised and we didn't have to worry about anything.
All in all I never expected this trip becoming so much fun and now I really miss it to travel in this group. I would definitely recommend you to travel with stray!
A.
Stray was the perfect way to spend my semester break! I was worried that I wouldn't get to see a lot of New Zealand since I only had a week. Stray made sure that I saw a LOT! Everyone on the bus was so friendly- it was easily the kind of trip you could enjoy on your own because you are bound to meet people to do things with. I did the STEW pass and highly recommend it. Get on a Stray bus if you can!
J.
Wonderful experience with the 14 day Mackinnon tour with Stray. The driver, who was also the tour guide, was safe, competent, kind, and helpful. They really have it well organized and we saw many beautiful places that would be difficult to see on your own in such a short time. We got the upgraded private room accommodations and they were mostly good--some places were great and others acceptable. This is a good value tour for the money paid. In Queenstown, we spent 3 nights, which was great because it gave us time to relax in one place and choose what we wanted to do there. I pre-booked a plane ride to Milford Sound and also a jet boat and "funkyak" tour with other companies, which were great. People on the tour were younger than me (I'm 70), but we all got along very well. Interesting people with good attitudes. You can be social when you want, or take time for yourself if you prefer that. There is no toilet in the bus, but the driver is happy to stop as needed for toilet breaks, and many stops were provided along the way to use bathrooms and also to get some food. The food was okay. Some of the dinners that were provided were great. Breakfasts could be improved, as I prefer a healthy diet. Choices were often limited for breakfast. For dinner, vegetarian options were offered, though not much protein came with the veggie dinners. New Zealand in general is not very health conscious in my view, with lots of fried food and meat. Chefs do not appear to know how to make vegetarian and vegan meals that have balanced protein. For breakfast, natural yogurt (rather than the fruit varieties that have lots of sugar) and options to dairy milk for vegans, and better quality granola with less sugar would have been good, but overall the food was ok. I bought some food at grocery stores to supplement the meals offered, so I was ok. The driver/guide didn't talk endlessly, as some tour companies seem to think that people need constant entertainment, which I find annoying. I highly recommend this inspiring, amazing tour!
L.
Stray is probably the easiest way to travel. I chose Stray for my trip through the South Island of New Zealand and it was amazing to just open your app, book the next bus and maybe even accomodation for the next places you'll visit. The best thing about them: their drivers!!! Absolutely nice, they know a lot of important but also weird stuff about the regions amd cities you're driving through and they are somehow always in a good mood!
It's just nice to know you can rely on your transportation and can worry about other things while travelling!
B.
Definitely worth the price! I would rather go with Stray to have more “off the track” experiences and as well enjoy the journey to its fullest rather to go with other bus companies where there is a hard party every day which leaves you hungover the next day.
You can make your own party on the Stray Bus whenever you or the group feels like it. I like as well that the age group and the nations of the people are more mixed which makes the journey even more unique.
I can only recommend this bus company even though they have to get their app fixed but you can always call them for every issue and the team is always friendly and happy to help you out with booking your busses.
Stick with stray, it will be worth it!
A.
Thank you Stray- Team for helping me to sort out my big adventure through New Zealand!
I had a great time travelling with Stray in New Zealand!
I met new friends for life, did amazing activities along the way and I really cannot say anything else than that I had such a good time! I recommend Stray to everyone who wants to make the most of their trip!
T.
I’ve loved pretty much every moment of my tour with Stray and Wings. While it is a lot of driving, you get quite a few stops in different places around the country to stretch your legs and look at sights! All the activities and food are really great too, can’t wait for my tour in Asia in a couple months!
M.
Best way to travel New Zealand! Great drivers, amazing people, unbelievable stops during the trip. Sadly not as flexible as I wish to. Have to book your busses far in advance otherwise they are fully booked out and you are the 5th or so on the standby list. But most of the time some people decide to change their dates and you get a spot on the bus. Very helpful if you call and explain which dates you have to travel. The App is amazing. Everything is so easy to book and always good activities with a great STRAY DISCOUNT! Thanks for the great time in New Zealand. See you maybe in Australia or Asia! Cheers!
R.
Stray provides excellent value for the journeys they offer. Our driver, Moose, was really excellent, and helped us out a lot. The activities are first class and we got to experience many new things and see a truly beautiful country that few get to see in the same way.
B.
Cannot reccomend Stray enough. Well worth the money for the amount of driving, standard of accommodation and number of included activities- and even.for the extra activities which you simply tell your driver you'd like to do and they organise for you at a discounted rate. Really takes the stress out of travelling if you're looking to see a lot of a place without taking 6 months off to see it.
Friendly, funny and knowledgeable drivers, brilliant route and activities, and priceless friends from across the world you'll make!!
S.
I really recommend Stray to solo travelers wanting to connect and meet with like minded people. Stray is super cost effective if you are alone as car rental and gas can become a huge expense fairly quickly. Stray is also helpful when it comes to finding Accomodation as they guarantee a room for you either 1-2 night accommodation. It’s really helpful during busy season and is the main reason I chose stray. You also learn a lot of culture, history, and they help you choose activities that will interest you.
C.
The places we visited in South Island in New Zealand is quite unique. The tour guide Husky has been very helpful and sort out issues and concerns we have during the trip. Good work Stray!
K.
A great 5star tour. A friend had recommended it to me and I'm very grateful. I had a blast. The activities are very good in terms of quality and value. All the meals that were provided were very good. The accommodation is varied but of a good standard. Would definately book with Stray again!

Well guys, where do I start? I'll make it as short as possible, otherwise you would still be reading my text tomorrow. I travelled with Stray for more then 2 month and finished with soo many new experiences and especially friends. Almost every passenger and driver were great people with lots of humor and an open mind. It'm both, happy and sad to go back home. But I would definetly recommend Stray to everyone, who wants to travel in New Zealand. Yes, the app isn't always working as it should (not often), but thats not worlds end. I had once that my booking was confirmed but didn't reach the hostel. I just had to pay the hostel again and get a refund from Stray, so that problem wasn't as big as it seems to be first. Apart from that, there isn't really a negative aspect, I can tell. All of the activitys I did were great, theres nothing I can find to improve. The hostels in the more remote places were all quite good, in the big citys I mostly booked the accomodation (YHA) myself.
So if you want to meet people, see the country, have fun and just travel, then I can definetly recommend Stray to you!
S.
Absolutely incredible experience, everyone was so nice and I’ve made some awesome friends on the tour. The tour itself was just out of this world as well as the activities that we did. The highlights of this trip would have to be, overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound, skydiving over Abel Tasman, swimming with dolphins in Kaikoura, Queenstown and kayaking on Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! I can’t pick out one highlight of the trip as it was all so amazing. I was constantly wowed by everything we saw and did. 12/10 would recommend.
F.
OMG not sure where to start?!
First of all, a massive thanks to all of you for having me!!
I felt like a member of the Stray family from when I first set foot on the bus. My driver Romeo was nothing short of amazing during the whole trip, always providing us with useful information, fun facts as well as cracking jokes. Despite hanging out with the group most of the time he had a lot of energy, even during the earliest of mornings. Not just a good driver, also a good friend! He and the trainee drivers even decorated our whole bus with balloons for my mates birthday!
The two trainee drivers Jaime and Tom were a good crack too, eager to learn and very professional but also hanging out with the group in the same time. I’d consider any future Stray traveller who ends up with any of them as their driver as very lucky!
Thanks Stray!!! <3
J.
Thanks Gaz, Ally and Olly at Stray Travel Shop for the great advice and help in planning my trip around New Zealand! I had a fantastic time exploring the country on the Stray Bus. The places we went were mind-blowing and the driver made the whole trip hassle-free. I'll be back soon to talk to you about travelling to Asia!
M.
Was hesitant to book but so happy I did! All the drivers were amazing and different. Motors was hilarious and always invited people to social events wherever we went, skippy had a ton of fun group activity options and was very sociable and Rolex had great music choices, organized a great group dinner as well as a fun night of trivia! Super easy way to travel the country! Highly recommend staying longer in a lot of the locations as they are all soooo amazing! Thanks stray!
E.
I went on the Dingle tour and it was fantastic. Great activities, accommodation and guide throughout the tour. A diverse group when it came to nationalities and age groups. Got on very well with the group. Completely removed all the stress of planning a tour of New Zealand had I tried to do it myself.
D.
Outstanding experience! Took the cook tour which includes north and south island. Was perfect to get a first impression of this breathtaking, wide-ranging country. Tourguides are competent and superfun. Contact with office was always helping and friendly (had questions before the tour started) To sum up: I can highly recommend Stray Travel.
T.
Amazing couple of weeks travelling around New Zealand, was so good i extended my trip from just the north island to south island aswell. Met a lot of really interesting people and got to take part in some amazing activities.
Many unforgettable memories made.
10/10 Would ride again
E.
It's funny when I look back now and remember how I felt nervous the night before my trip with Stray began. 2 weeks later and I've made life long friends, laughed until i cried, had teeth brushing dance parties, rafted off massive waterfalls, and seen so many amazing sights. Special thanks to Shockz our driver, guide, joke teller, problem solver, and advice giver. Thanks for the memories!!
L.
First time that I went on a group journey, and thanks to Stray (especially our driver Lego and of course the other group members) I would definitely do it again! Was a lot of fun, with different options for different activities which made it easy for everyone to find something fun for them to do and enjoy.
C.
There a couple of bus options to choose from when you want to see the whole New Zealand. But I am definitely glad that I made the right choice and I travelled with Stray. From the bus drivers, tie up accommodation and activities, it's as if Stray knows you so well and they know how to keep you happy and satisfied. Cheers and more power to Stray! Ka pai! Boohyeah!😎😎
D.
Great trip.Would do again in a heart beat. Our traveling companions became family ( including the driver guide). Our guide Husky did an absolutely outstanding job, adding to an already great trip.
E.
Best way for someone travelling alone to see New Zealand... You gain an instant family! Be prepared to book your buses well in advance in summer though, hard to spontaneously hop off during peak season.
J.
I loved travelling with Stray! I met so many nice people and I could enjoy everything New Zealand has to offer. Great thanks to the drivers and my fellow travellers :)
J.
Sweet as bro! I did the 10 day Batten tour of the North Island. We did so many activities and most are included. We even stayed at some hotels as well, and most breakfasts and dinners are included, with good variety and choice. Took us to some unique places. I wish it never ended.
A.
It really depends on which bus driver you get and the group you are travelling with. The first bus driver Lego was so cool and our group was just perfect . The route is very cool and i liked it a lot. Later we had a grumpy bus driver and it was more like a school trip. "You have 8 minutes to take a picture...if you are one minute late i leave you behind" "dont ask me questions, i told you everthing before" So if youre older i wouldnt recommend stray to you. All activities cost more than booking it by yourself. Its not cheap its just an easy way to travel if you havent rlly prepared anything
T.
A bit overpriced for what's included, but definitely a great way to see a load of New Zealand
R.
Amazing tour company. Seagull our guide was fab. Great balance of activities. Good mix of people ranging from age 18-70 and from all over the world. Felt safe and was looked after.
T.
Stray made my first trip to New Zealand fantastic! I loved it, drivers are amazing, fun and so helpful! My first Stray-cation was a success!
T.
If you take yourself some time every now and then its a wonderful alternative to buying your own car, with enthusiastic and very helpful drivers! Even though some points of interest are missing on their route (e.g. Dunedin or Hawke's Bay) you still get a magnificent ride through the country, highly recommended!
D.
Had an absolute amazing experience with Stray. Had a really incredible social and supporting group. Also an amazing thank you to the leader of it all, our vegan bus driver Lightning! ⚡
S.
Would recommend to travel with Stray any time. Very easy and comfortable, good variety of ages in the group of travellers and cool bus drivers. Enjoyed the trip a lot.
J.
I had the most unbelievable time on this trip. I was a little nervous about joining an organized tour and not blending in, but our tour manager made sure no one felt left out and it was amazing. A once in a lifetime trip for sure!
A.
I loved my trip with Stray! The guides were awesome and the activities provided an authentic NZ experience. I would totally recommend this company.
S.
I loved every minute of this tour. I am so glad that I decided to book with Stray travel. Well worth the money, and now I have lots of new friends to visit around the world!
A.
Thanks to crew at Stray who got me sorted for my big North Island adventure. The trip was everything they promised and more! Stray's shop has a big comfy couches and wifi to chill out on and do some travel planning - make the most of it!
M.
Fabulous time! The app is a bit of a pain but the drivers are great. You can meet some really interesting people or keep to yourself, it's nice to have the option of both. I would use Stray again
M.
Awesome journey, I saw beautiful places and thanks to the guide discovered interesting stories. In the future I hope to repeat the experience with Stray, because without it I would not have enjoyed it so much!!
s.
Great way to travel New-Zealand! Would reccoment stray. If you want to do activities, better ask driver where And Which ones to do. Do NOT do the star gazing thing in Mt Cook that is a Total rip off And So not worth the money!!
E.
Unfortunately I didn't reserve my seat ahead of time like I was supposed to. I really want to come back to New Zealand and experience the Stray. But I've seen pictures form my friends and they loved it.
M.
Absolutely worth it. Got to know really good people and we went to numerous fantastic places. Seagull and Husky were excellent drivers and the organisation was just perfect.
A.
I’ve been on 3 separate trips with Stray and in total spent almost 8 weeks with them. They truly made my trip. Absolutely love these guys and would totally recommend them

J.
Great way to experience New Zealand. The destinations are some you wouldn't find on your own and it's definitely worth the experience.

Did the cook tour and loved the included activities. There was a great mix of ages. I would highly recommend for a solo traveller.

(Translated) The best vacation of my life! A lot of impressions, not only from New Zealand, but also from communication with people. To ride a bus in a big company of young people is very fun. There is an opportunity to practice English. Classy guides-drivers will not let you get bored. I would like to see Stray in Europe, tk. I will spend my vacation there, most likely.

(Translated) 1 The route design is great. 2 All hotel locations are very good, either the city centre or the attractions. And some lodges are comfortable and distinctive. 3 During the trip, I will get along with New Zealand drivers and guides and multi-national friends to improve my English and understand foreign customs. 4 It is not recommended for girls to accept a house. It is possible for a girl to fight a room with a number of male members. The girl suggested to join the group. Applying for an upgrade to a separate accommodation is cost effective. 5 I feel that New Zealand is still safe on the road. Have not encountered deliberate provocation or theft.
