Reviews of North Egmont Visitor Centre
G.
Good visitors centre, the lady behind the desk didn't say much. But I didn't ask anything.
Walked to the look out and monument and done the nature trail that leads you into the lower carpark which was great.
L.
Great place to stop for a burger and drink. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Limited menu, but it all looked good in the dining room. Reasonable prices.
R.
Walked the summit absolutely amazing. Thank you to doc for the amazing work building stairs part the way, this would have taken a massive effort! Visitor centre has great info friendly staff and a cafe! Yes they have jellytip ice cream
M.
North Egmont Visitor Center mainly serves as an information center and sells souvenirs for hikers that climbs the magnificent Taranaki. The center has a cafe that serves refreshments and drinks for tourists. It has toilets and you may refill your water bottle from the water fountain at the center. The car park is relatively spacious but during summer season it gets filled up fast due to high volume of tourists coming to the site.
J.
Heaps of walks of different lengths. Stunning as we were there on one if the rare fine days and actually saw the mountain which I was positive was fake news. My only reason not 5 stars is because some unrespecatable people left rubbsh laying around and there were no bins to put it in once I picked it up.
N.
Start your Mt Taranaki adventure here. It has 3 toilets- one was out of order. All the info you need to do your trip.
S.
Great stop in Taranaki. Easy to find. Very informative for walkers or tourists who just want to get closer to the mighty mountain.
Toilets and cafe. Only had coffee which was ok.
Great views on a clear day.
Helpful staff who will advise which walking routes are best suited to your experience or a choice of 2 lookouts. First one being easily accessed within 4 mins. Some walking equipment can be hired like walking sticks and a place to stay for walkers can be booked. There is a shuttle bus, but not sure on the timetabling as didnt require it. It's a new service from New Plymouth.
Go prepared for walking with weather changes in mind and take supplies on your walk.
Take your rubbish away and
NO DOGS for conservation reasons which you will learn about during your visit.
K.
Lot of information on tracks around the mountain. If you're just passing by NP this is a must do. Drive up to the viewing point after reaching the centre car park. Amazing views on clear days
F.
A special mountain, with many hiking opportunities. It is useful to have a good condition because the road to the top is long. In the visitor center they have delicious coffee and friendly people who like to tell you about "their" mountain.
A.
Amazing visitor centre even if you just want to go for a sneak peak of the mountain. Great view of the peak right behind. Situated inside the national park offers FREE wifi, FREE water, FREE toilets and FREE and safe parking for many days. Like most doc run info sites the lovely staff gave detailed, unbiased and complete information about all tracks and weather conditions. There is a CAFE with delicious food and a souvenir store and last minute weather gear as well. Many small and big tracks start from here. We spent a lot of time here and lived it. Thanks DOC and thanks STAFF.
D.
Amazing to camp here for free. Couldn’t believe the state of the toilets left by other campers. Filled with rubbish. If we don’t look after it camping will be stopped so take rubbish away and don’t wash up in the toilets. Cafe very limited for breakfast, was hoping for a good meal but only sandwiches so drove off.
R.
Good to find such a place so high up. Cafe and important information for your visit/trek up the volcano. Lots of trails of varying lengths. Interesting forest environment below the tree line.
B.
Really good visitor center. Very friendly staff. I did the around the mountain track and they gave me all information needed. Advised me on which track to take. Rented a beacon from them. There is also a nice cafe inside and a sort of museum about mount Taranaki and all the wildlife. You can spend the night at the car park with self contained car. And leave the car for multi days. No problem very safe.
I.
Beautiful views and lots of tracks for all levels. Did the 40 min loop and it was nice.
V.
Good structure for visitors and tourists. Great view of Mt. Taranaki. Nice trails for every kind of age and people.
H.
A gorgeous spot on a good day. The information provided is very helpful, the staff is very friendly and it is an awesome place to bring little children.
Z.
Great Lodge, you can wake up early and head up the mountain.
K.
Beautiful drive up to visitor centre where there are views, views, and more views. Informative displays.
J.
What a spot outstanding views. nice place for a picnic clean toilets 🚻
p.
Great place to stop in and visit, with some nice walks nearby
H.
Camping for free toilett is good. After hiking you can sleep over night in your self containt campervan. No water, no dump!
S.
Need somewhere to park before you hit the north side of the Mount! Plus the rangers here are always good to chat to and have great advice.
B.
Good spot for views of Taranaki and a relatively easy drive up from New Plymouth. Check-in with staff here about hiking routes and weather forecasts if you want to go tramping. There's also a little cafe and gift shop along with some displays about the national Park's geology and wildlife.
J.
You need this after the walking/ hiking up and around the mountain!! Great coffee.. and the loaded wedges were epic :)
C.
Awesome climb from here, up a great path through the bush to a stunning view.
M.
Must go and see if you in Taranaki. Great views of plateau. If you love tramping and hiking, this is great place to start. Information centre have all info you need. If planning Tracks, plz go prepared as weather system here on mountain changes in Just few minutes.
S.
Wondetful experience... so close to the mountain.. great displays and even better coffer and food.
V.
Nice service, friendly people and very helpful when you need info.
P.
Beautiful place staff friendly and helpful display interesting and fun view spectacular even with a bit of cloud and drizzle around
B.
Parking was an issue that melted away to nothing with absolutely the nicest people talking to people waiting and handing out bottles kof water. Got up to the visitor centre where they had more fantastic, helpful staff. The area itself was well looked after. All round had a great time. Well reccomended
M.
Really friendly staff and nice coffee
J.
Very good place to spend a day
T.
Beautiful experience. No use coming to taranaki without going up to mount taranaki.
J.
The ranger was really informative and helpful
D.
Stunning views across the northern aspect of the province, fresh clean air and Silence!
Until you're up there you don't realise how much background sound we live with.
Even the children comment on it.
M.
Great collection of information about the Mountain. Amazing views and lots of tracks for all levels. Will be back in the summer to walk some.
H.
Enjoyed the park n ride experience on the bus up the hill to the top end, beautiful views from the Station with a lot of information to do with doc and their out look. Tracks are clearly marked before venturing off further up the hill, clean toilets with a ground level entrance and stairway entrance to the toilets. Easy ramp access into the information center and an awesome experience to beheld by all visiting, a must see if your in the area.
P.
Very useful visitor centre with lots of information about the park. Can get maps, trekking food, waterproofs, warms clothes if you've forgotten anything before going off on your trek. Plus the doc guys are always awesome and very helpful. Visit the cafe if you need a hot drink to warm you up after a cold day too.
T.
Nice visitor centre. But a few problems for campers: toilets are very bad and dirty. No checkups on parking (like small cars on long campervan spots). Also no bins provided anywhere in the park! Seems like a good plan? NO!! All the garbage gets dumped at the toilets and they also don't tell the good and honest people where to go with your rubbish. Make a recycling station somewhere!!
C.
Well done to DOC for providing this great self contained camping facility. Makes early access to the park much easier and ultimately safer for hikers to get on their way in cooler temperatures. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
I.
Great educational facility for all ages
M.
An excellent visitor's centre in an awesome location!
T.
Great night for freedok camping, though you do hear sounds of people starting their treks way too early. Amazing views of bith the volcano and NP
S.
It’s pity on the day it was raining and foggy so we didn’t get chance to see the Mt Taranaki.
r.
Very lovely view and walk and drive but only prob was .. We went there for a walf and cup of coffee but when we reached there cafe was shut. Should have been notice out side or online update .
A.
This place seems pretty good. There is amazing views of Taranaki plains and the views of the mountain were great. There is some tracks which start from here and the visitors centre would be a great place to start as it has plenty of parking and public toilets open all the time.
J.
Great place for information about the region, walks and the park/mountain. It had an interactive map which helped us decide on our destinations for the day and a daily board is out the front providing current information on walks and tramping. There was also a display detailing some of the regional history upstairs and a small cafe. Great views of the mountain on a platform a short walk from the centre. In a clear day, you can see the Tongariro mountains as well. Staff were helpful and pleasant.
p.
I love this place, soo amazing.
E.
As visitor centre's go, this is pretty average. Some interesting facts about the mountain on display. Usual tourist gift stuff. I'm sure if you've been up the mountain. The cafe would be a most welcome sight. Basic food. Service could do with a bit more effort.
H.
Informative, plenty of walks for all ages. Can choose from short walks of 20-40 minutes to longer walks of a few hours or even an 8-10 hour hike up to the summit.
R.
Very nice visitor center up on the north face of Mt Taranaki. The facilities are very well maintained and there's a baby change room available as well. Views to the city and the mountain are awesome. The staff are very knowledgeable and nice. A lot of trivia and memorabilia is available for purchase here. Parking can be hard to find on busy days hence there's a shuttle running from 6-7 kms away from the center. Very well recommended.
M.
There are enough parking spaces available. Toilets to use before hiking. And the best is the customer service officers there!! Very knowledgeable about the mountain, happy to give advise and always with a smile!! Thank you!!
R.
What an amazing experience, walking up the side of a volcano and seeing the breathtaking views on he way up. Didn't make it to the top, but an incredible journey all the same. Stunning scenery. Something to tick off my bucket list if I had one.
P.
It's not what you come for if you come this far, but to discover they are only selling souvenirs and not even coffee was disappointing. Walk great as usual.
J.
Quite a small car park considering what's on offer for visitors. We arrived and it was a 'one in one out' operation. The chap manning the traffic informed us to check out Stratford Plateau to park, which we did later that day- much bigger car park can easily get hundreds of cars there and has links to many of the walking trails, you're even higher up the mount.
Once we got to mount egmont visitor centre there was no one there to direct us to a space, so we were driving around wondering where to park for some time. Organisation wasn't great.
The information centre itself was pretty interesting, a cool little gift shop as well and lots of maps for sale and information about the trails. The chap behind the counter had clearly given the same talk and information over and over which was evident in his manner!
s.
Very helpful staff. Has a coffee shop but only open on weekends. Good short walks for a breathtaking view
T.
The visitor center was closed at the time we were there, but there is a lot of useful information posted in the windows, such as weather forecast and updates for the individual tracks. There's a book just past the entry where you can enter your contact details and departure /return times for emergencies.
J.
Great staff and great local knowledge
N.
Lovely place with amazing views and informative staff. You can get track maps and weather information. There’s a cafe available for a quick bite and delicious coffee.
J.
Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. Just ask them anything and they will recommend you a route. Food, drinks and a toilet is available. Maps are also available at a price, but you can snap a picture of the maps if you need to
S.
Very quiet at the moment with covid, but cafe still open and good views to be seen. Not much snow now but still in walking distance
R.
Most importantly you can fill up your water bottles here before heading for the track.
It is a very nice Centre , there's a cafe inside for relaxing and a museum to soak up some knowledge. You can also catch a glimpse of Taranaki on a clear day.
G.
Outstanding awesome displays and a lot of history of the mountain
Worth the walk an visit
B.
Very helpful and informed staff. Free to camp the night of your hike and toilets open all night. 👍
T.
Great walk to the summit of Mt Taranaki. But be prepared for all weather. It's a mountain & has claimed lives. Go prepared.
B.
Good place to summit the mountain from, very few car parks so get there early as in the morning or you might not be able to park you vehicle anyway ,last time I was up there 23/03/19 when I got back to car park from the summit at 11 am there where traffic control people that conned off the car park as it was full and those people had to turn around and go back down or wait for someone to leave
V.
Like most of the DOC centers we have visited. Very nice and helpful staff.. The have a lot of long and short walks to enjoy there. But always remember weather there can change very quickly so be prepared

Worth the drive even if you just go for the view and coffee
M.
Great views, only weather stopped us seeing top on the mountain
G.
Grab a coffee, go to the lookout and wait for a break in the cloud to check out Mt Taranaki. Classic picture opportunity by the Ambury Memorial. Take the short loop walks through the native bush.
M.
Great place to spend a few hours at. Wander around the gardens and local tracks then have a cuppa coffee and a snack.

(Translated) I can only recommend this place! The walks are superb, well appointed, stunning views of Mt Taranaki, the Doc staff are fabulous! I'll just take one star away from public restroom ownership. We spent one night there, and waking up to the mountain will be forever etched in our memories!
We even saw rabbits there in the early morning!

(Translated) You can tell that the concept is not designed for so many people. The ongoing heat and the little rain lead to restrictions in the water supply. This is M. E. fully OK people with their own car could also bring water. It was still enough for the backpackers. Otherwise delicious muffins after a hard tour and a cold cola. I take some tourists with stuff too.
