The overnight visit is an exceptional experience and if you love glamping then definitely book one of the tents.

The skipper Coops was enthusiastic, professional and a gun when it came to docking onto the tractor trailer in the chop.
We recommend the guided tour, it provides meaningful and interesting context you just cant google, Robert was brilliantand patient with my sons random questions.
We tried playing bingo, choosing the birds first and ticking then off once we see them. Worked a charm
Saw plenty of wildlife
Went up the Trig track which is steeper (not too bad, pretty much if you can get up the firebreak in Lowerhutt your sweet).
The look out was misty but made for a mystical forest.

Kapitiislandeco had a super easy and slick booking process/check in and were so friendly and knowledgeable. My kids thought the boat ride was fantastic and was even allowed to sit in the skipper’s seat on the way home. Big big smiles all round!
On the island We saw heaps of bird life, and learnt loads about the history and conservation of the island. Even on a bit of a misty rainy day- our island experience was MAGICAL. Absolute paradise and we can’t wait to go again.

The experience is exceptional. Coops and the team are great hosts, informative and ensure things run smoothly. The trip across was a great experience in itself. The beach landing at Kapiti Island is fun and you do not even get your feet wet.
Then you get to the real star of the show, Kapiti Island. Like stepping back in time you are surrounded with native bush and rich bird life like it was hundreds of years ago. The walk up to the bird feeders is worth it with a concentration of native birds like you will never have experienced before.

B. M.A beautiful island with many unique attributes. Gives a great impression of what New Zealand may have been like before humans arrived. The birdlife is superb. I suggest the less fit (like me) focus on the lower levels where there is plenty to see, rather than spending most of your time and energy trying to get to the top of the island. The view up there is great but doesn't compensate for having insufficient time to appreciate other attributes of the island.

S. M.We had a great time at Kapiti Island yesterday. We had the guided tour with Brenda for an hour and saw loads of different native birds. Walked up to the Hihi feeding station through some amazing regenerated native bush. Really worth the experience!!
C. H.What a fantastic tour. Very well organised by the Cooper family and their staff. Before we even got on the boat we watched a couple of Orca swimming down the Kapiti channel chasing rays. The boat trip over and back was very comfortable and informative. The Island is spectacular. The native bush regeneration after 100 years is stunning. The bird life is second to none. We saw almost everything that we thought we would see and those we didn't we heard. The view from the top is well worth the walk and the relax on the beach with the driftwood was a wonderful way to relax after the walk.

I enjoyed the 20 minute boat ride to get there, the education upon arrival to the island, the timing of the other groups so we weren't on top of each other, the walk up to Tūteremoana with the sounds of the birds to accompany me and time to explore a little bit before we left. It was all very professional, beautiful, educational and obvious that the people working here respect and value this jewell of an island. I definitely recommend this company!

The hike on the island was amazing, it’s a challenging hike to the summit but we did it with two kids in tow.
Our kids loved the island experience, hearing and seeing a good range of native birds, they otherwise would not normally experience.
Our guide Robert has a mountain of knowledge and is passionate about the island and the revitalisation of native birds.
For those thinking the hike might be too much, just get to the bird feeding station, you won’t regret it, turn around from there.
I am already recommending Kapiti Eco Tours to others, it’s a special day out. Ngā mihi nui!

Tracks available are suited to all fitness levels so everyone can enjoy the day. Highly recommended I can't imagine anyone who decides to embark on this little day trip adventure being disappointed. But anyway there's only way to find out for yourself and that's to just go do it!!!!!! Enjoy :)

S.We had the best time on the motu. We took 5 grandkids ranging from 6 - 18 and each one of them enjoyed it in a way that was best for them. The operation was very efficient, leaving at the time stated and returning at the time stated. The information provided on the island was fantastic and helped us recognise the bird calls. Huge knowledge of history dating back to the 1700s which I thoroughly enjoyed hearing. The Island is just stunning. This is well worth the trip. The cost was reasonable and hadn't changed much from our visit 20 years ago. So easy with Eco tours. A great team of people

It was a great tramp to the summit with spectacular views across to the South island. We had perfect sunny and windless weather but I have it on good authority that the island is super interesting in the wet too.

M. M.Kapiti has always been on the list of "We must do that one day", 2020 being a year of no international travel, we are finally exploring our own amazing region. And we weren't disappointed. The team were great, efficient, but relaxed.
The boat ride, across the 5Km stretch of water, landing on the rocky beach and short walk to the info area was a great start to our day. We were greeted by weka, kaka, kakariki, and the songs from tui, kokako, and bell birds. We then walked the Wilkinson track to Tuteremoana summit look out. 360 degree views looking to the south, Tararuas on the east, Ruapehu to the north, and vastness to the west.
Next time will definitely be the over night stay.

We got a sunny day, kind staff and experienced boat driver. After landing at Rangatira Point, we attended a 30-minute presentation at the DOC centre to hear the story of sustainability on Kāpiti Island. After that, we follow the Trig track which gives us a country view to reach the summit and follow The Wilkinson trackback to downhill. We have a picnic lunch at the summit under the sunshine with breeze wind and 360- degree view of the sea and south island. What a Pune NZ tour experience. Also, we saw lots of sea birds off the coastal waters. Thanks!

We went with our toddler, and she had a great time seeing the Weka, Kaka, Kereru, Tui etc. We climbed up to the top which was a nice walk. First section is reasonably steep but it flattens out.
So glad we did it!

They also gave me some nice tips for me to see all the birds I had on my "list". I saw kokako, parakeets, saddlebacks, tui, kaka, weka, stitchbirds, bellbirds, takahe, robins, woodpigeons and whiteheads. It was an unforgettable experience that I would love to repeat.

There is a tour guide who was a former ranger on the island who gives tours and is naturally filled with an abundance of knowledge of the species and plants that inhabit the island. Also, there is an utmost respect and care given to the local iwi in regards to historical content (and as myself who is Maori and knows this history intricately, all information was shared in an utterly respectful and nurturing way with such accuracy and precision with the mana it deserved). I would not hesitate recommending this as one of wellingtons greatest tourism experiences to friends, whanau, colleagues and community. The Trig track is steep but a good adventure. There are wekas everywhere! I also saw saddleback, hihi, kaka, kakariki, takahe, keruru... the island is teeming with native birds and is a stunning place. We were lucky with the weather, it was a clear blue day; you could see for miles from Tuteremoana peak (incl South Island.)

P. F.Highly recommended. Our guide was so knowledgeable and passionate about ecology, birds and NZ history, you just can't help but absorb his enthusiasm too. It was really so amazing to see so many native birds in one place. Like nothing I've ever experienced, it's like traveling through time back to NZ in the 1800's. We took the 5 hour trip plus a guided tour, but could have spent much longer out there. Definitely recommend walking to the summit, the views are incredible. Would also recommend going for a snorkel too once you get back down. I will do this tour again, for sure. Thanks a lot to the staff at KIE for a great day out.

Saw Takahe, Tui, Saddleback, HeHe, Kokako and had up close time with Kaka and Weka.Didnt make it all the way to the top as my son and I cruised, and I went for a crystal clear April snorkel (with my own gear inc.wetsuit as it was cold.) Luckily our captain had suggested that I lie still in the water to see the fish come out, and I saw heaps , all sizes! in the stunning luminous green seaweed of this marine reserve. Our guide was very knowledgable, and the whole experience was fantastic! We will be back.

Brimming with bird llife, we met a few cheeky wekas and a Kaka who was pretty determined to steal our lunch! Getting the guided tour was great to help get us in the bird spotting zone. We didn't have to walk too far up the track to see a range of birds... . and enjoyed a swim before the boat came to pick us up! Staff all very friendly and informative, a great day out.

A quintessential kiwi experience - launching a boat off the beach, native birds n bush, a dip in the ocean at the end. Many birds that you won't see on the mainland in the wild. Quite exciting, and on the way back somehow we lucked onto a pod of dolphins escorting a rather large whale.

The info about the island while on the boat, a bit of the history, was informative and interesting. After the briefing and info about tracks and boat pick up times, we were free to explore. Saw lots of different bird types but sadly no kaka. We spent the morning walking uphill to the summit and the amazing views, then back down for some rest before the boat ride back. Well worth doing!

The island itself is great and we loved our walk to the summit. the track (we went via the Wilkinson track) was well maintained and the timings (2 hrs up, 1.5 hrs back) were generous without being inaccurate.

The lady that talked to us before the tour was amazing, entertaining and also knowledgeable.
The reason for the 3 stars was the transport, we understood the rocky journey as it's a boat, but their was a very strong smell of fuel the whole time there and back.
I wanted to warn other people so they know what to except. We wore masks on the way back and this filtered it a little bit.
The fresh air helps after the boat ride to feel better but it left us feeling very unwell.

K.This was an amazing day out. Good communication from the Kapiti Island Eco team regarding arrival times and worked hard. Guide was amazing with lots of local knowledge and pointed out many birds in the short walk to the Induction Point. The island itself is the true star, the hike up to the top is a hard walk but can be done slowly and worth the effort. Keep an eye out for the Kaka at the nectar feeding station, loves to try and steal food and not afraid to jump on your shoulder to do it.

D. H.I organised a group tour for our Sports Club & some work colleagues. We struck a beautiful day and had a great time doing the Rangatira tour. Coops, Vicky and their team made sure we had all the info needed and the trip there & back was easy-going. Brenda our guide was really informative and gave us a good history of the island and run-down of the birdlife we might see. We then had about 4-5 hours to ourselves. Some of us opted for the Trig track up to the summit, bit more challenging but the bush is spectacular. Great views at the top & we got to see almost all of the birdlife on the way (except Kiwi). S. C.We really enjoyed our trip to Kapiti Island. The staff were quite friendly and professional. We scored beautiful weather on the day and felt like we really got the most out of our time. The only thing I hesitate on when considering my rating was the price-tag. $80 per person is not really worth the price based on what you get out of it. What you do get is a great hike with some beautiful views. The island is special don't get me wrong, however we have gone to some equally beautiful places and done some equally beautiful hikes that were $80 less than this was.

T.A visit to Kapiti Island has been a 'bucket list' item for many years, one which has now been achieved following a recent visit with this company. Kapiti Island Eco exceeded expectations in every respect. Although self guided options are available, we chose a guided tour. Our guides were informative with great knowledge of both the island's environment an it's Maori/European history. Both guides were great ambassadors for their company and for the island.
A highly informative day made more interesting and entertaining by a boat trip to/from the island. We felt safe and well looked after all day.
Kapiti Island is predator free and a New Zealand icon. A visit should be on every New Zealander's 'bucket list'.

w.Kapiti Island Eco (KIE) is an excellent way to have a great day out on Kapiti Island and experience the wildlife without the crippling prices of the lodge or 'glamping' activities. The experience of boarding the boat whilst still trailered on the beach, to the launch by modified tractor into the surf for the short 20 min ride to the beach landing is all part of the fun (no you don't get your feet wet!). The highlight of the trip is the walk up to the trig at Tuteremoana, which is a short sharp climb of 521m from sea level. Brenda from KIE gave a great briefing of what to do, where to go and what to look out for, then it was up to individuals to go to the top at their own leisure. This company is run by it's owner/operators Coops and a small team who are dedicated to the safety (its only 5.5km from Paraparaumu Beach to Rangatira Point on the island but the Rauoterangi Channel can get extreme weather and sea state at short notice) and situational awareness of clients from the start to finish of the activity. I highly recommend KIE as an excellent way to experience Kapiti Is if you don't have the budget to do the overnight activities. Thanks again team for a great day out!
K. H.What a wonderful experience. We were lucky enough to receive this experience as a Christmas gift. The communication with the company and owner was easy, informative and they responded quickly. Check in was easy and soon we were off on an adventure. The boat ride was comfortable and we felt well cared for. Once on the Island the guides were knowledgeable about local history, wildlife and conservation. We were able to explore the Island at our own pace with recommendations if we wanted them. We had young children with us so chose to walk the Rangatira Loop with a sidetrack up the Wilkinson track to the hihi feeder. What a day we saw many species of birds and due to the identification sheet provided were able to identify them. We had up close and personal interactions with many birds. The guides caught up with us when they saw us on the track and were genuinely interested in what we had seen and what our experience was like. The boat ride back was on time and as a family we were very happy with the overall experience. Thankyou very much.

L.These guys are the absolute business! Amazing communication before the trip regarding weather, what to bring, when to arrive etc. Super welcoming on arrival - coffee cart, smiles, efficient. Awesome, fascinating history lesson about the island from the owner/skipper whilst waiting to depart. Comfortable boat ride over with life jackets/safety covered and a dry-feet landing on the island. Robert the guide was so knowledgable and engaging. And then the island itself...wow! A magical place teeming with birdlife and beautiful flora. After Robert's talk we explored the island walking up to the summit for glimpses of the spectacular view during breaks in the cloud. We saw/heard kaka, bellbird, tui, saddleback, takahe, kokako, black-backed gulls and their chicks and more. The whole experience enhanced by all the history and flora and fauna knowledge imparted before we set off. We had the perfect amount of time on the island and then picked up by the boat off the beach. From the owner to the guide to the tractor driver - everything perfect. A big thumbs up from our whole family. Thanks so much team!!

We were blessed with great weather and a smooth boat trip over and back. The first thing I noticed when arriving on the island was the variety of bird song. We did the summit walk and saw and heard a number of different birds on the day. A Kaka even landed on my shoulder and stayed there (thinking he was a parrot) for a few minutes while I kept moving). We had a visitor from New Mexico with us and he absolutely loved his day trip there.

We went there in good weather and made full use of the opportunities available to see the birds around the low land loops as well as the trek to the summit lookout. Our guide was a mine of information which was appropriate and inspiring - his enthusiasm was contagious. The early talks primed us for our own trek later on. The highlight was seeing first hand the tree regeneration and close up encounters of the birds in their natural habitat.

We took grandchildren out to the island aged 7-10 and they loved the talk about the birds and history of the island delivered from an experienced guide at the beginning. They then went out with the pictures on the map to find some of the birds that were spoken about. The climb to the top was a bit arduous as we are so unfit, but we managed it and would recommend good walking shoes to everyone who attempts this. Overall we would highly recommend this trip as a must to do when visiting New Zealand or if a local an experience of our history. Very professionally run by people that know what they are talking about, well worth the $$.

They helped spot and identify wildlife and plants and our guide brought the island's history to life with tales of love, wars and general shenanigans. We made the effort to walk to the summit - views across the kapiti coast one side and south island on the other. Whole family loved it!

Revisited March 2021. Another great experience. The climb to the top is quite a slog, but so many birds and trees to see on the way (tip - don’t think of the top as your goal - take your time to see everything on your way. If you walk up enough, you’ll get to the top, but you won’t miss out on what makes the island special if you don’t get that far).

The guide, Brenda, helped us find many bird species. It was nice to have a guide because it increased my appreciation for the island reserve.

J. C.I booked our trip out to Kapiti Island online from the U. S. From start to finish Glen ("Coops") was quick to respond to my booking request and followup questions I had. On the day, he and his wife/partner were so very welcoming and friendly. John, who captained the boat to Kapiti was also such a warm-hearted person and we felt safe in his hands for the crossings there and back. We took the option of a guided walk with Brenda who was very knowledgeable about the history of the island and all the birds.
We were quite surprised by the number of birds and the beautiful birdsong, there being much more than we expected And the native NZ bush was so beautiful and lifted our spirits. It was paradise.
We climbed to the summit which is known as Tuteremoana. We took the Trig Track up which is the steeper but shorter option and which joins the longer but less*steep Wilkinson Track about 3/4 of the way to the summit. The tracks are well-maintained, clearly marked, wide, and easy to follow. There's no risk of getting lost.
The hike to the top is rewarded by beautiful views. There is a viewing platform you can climb so you can see above the trees. The South Island was easy to see and we were able to just make out the grey outlines of Mounts Taranaki and Ruapehu since we were fortunate enough to have a clear day. They would be easier to spot in the winter no doubt once they have some snow cover. There were also two picnic tables at the top, and also more at the junction of the Trig and Wilkinson Track
Many locals told us that they have not been across to Kapiti Island although they have often thought about it. If you are a local and reading this, I really encourage you to do so. And if you are visiting the area from overseas and you enjoy getting outside and hiking, here is a unique way to get a taste of what NZ looked and sounded like before the arrival of man and introduced mammalian species that predate on NZ birdlife and forest. And the team at Kapiti Island Eco Experience will make it all fall into place easily for you. Thank you Coops and the team at Kapiti Island Eco Experience for a very enjoyable and uplifting day.

J.Our family group had a great time going to Kapiti Island on Saturday - a bumpy ride over and a calm ride back. The staff were welcoming and gave good clear instructions and information. Our ages ranged from 4 years old to 70 and most of us walked through the beautiful bush up the Wilkinson Track to the Hihi Feeding Station. We shared memories, tried not to share our snacks with the cheeky, funny Kaka, took photos and then sang a waiata together, before walking down to The Whare. There we shared more stories and memories with the lovely DOC staff Lee and Richard. It was a truly profound and memorable day for us all. Many thanks to everyone. L. R.We had a fabulous time today on the day trip to Kapiti w Glen and his team. Kapiti is a beautiful place, peaceful, delishisly green and teaming with bird life. Glen is a fantastic host friendly, organised, and punctual. I really loved hearing the history of the people of kapitI which was well researched and told. He’s really good at making people feel welcome and shares his knowledge so it’s interesting and relatable. The doc ranger gave a history of bird life both in NZ and on the island and I have a feeling there’s not much he doesn’t know on the topic and he’s really eager to share. The tractor driver is very skilful at getting the boat in the water and you just know you’re in safe hands. They allow 2 hours for the walk to the top though it’s easily done in an hour unless you are really into stopping to check out the choir of birds. Flush toilets on the island was an unexpected luxury. Wisely Glen ensures an excellent coffee shop on wheels is on hand prior to departure so you can top up on the essentials. It’s a really great day out and it’s fab to deal with such a well run business and people so passionate about making your day a success. I’ll be very keen to hear about the kayaking venture in the pipeline.

What amazed me the most was the density of wildlife on Kapiti. I've been to Zealandia and Mana Island, but Kapiti is so much older which means that the birdlife is much more established and plentiful. My highlights were definitely watching some weka having a tussle on the way to the summit, as well as the Hihi and Bellbird feeders.

G. B.Pania (guide) and Rodney (captain) were friendly, and approachable. tour was well on time, and efficiently run. Short ferry-ride over was smooth, with optional life-jackets. The 30-40 minute Maori and conservation history was probably a bit much for most visitors, but had a nice personal touch, and did (finally) talk about the island wildlife.
Bird feeding stations half-way up the mid-island tracks were brilliant for sighting hihi/stich birds. When we went the view was completely cloudy.
We saw Tui, Kakariki, an army of Stich birds(Hihi), Saddlebacks (Tieke), a Bellbird, Black Robins, Fantails, Kokaku, plenty of cheeky Weka, A seal and seagulls on the boat too. Loved hearing the 'cacophony' of bird song, that early settlers would have heard, the whole time.

Rob our tour guide was so good at imitating bird song and identifying who they were. such a great day. .totally recommend.

S.(Translated) Wow, wow and again wow! What a great place to go after here :) we had the opportunity to spend the night on the island and that was beautiful! In the morning, at the start of our trip, we were first dropped off at the center of the island. A good educational intro was given by a guide about the island. After that everyone is free to walk the different tracks (3 tracks). After this beautiful hike and seeing many beautiful birds we were picked up to continue the trip to the northern part. What a welcome by the owner say, what an energy :) The food was very well cared for as well as breakfast and lunch. In the evening you go looking for the kiwi, a very nice experience to be able to see this from close by, thnx guys !! Loved it

Wauw, wauw en nog eens wauw! Wat een te gekke plek om hier na toe te gaan:) wij hadden de kans om op het eiland een overnachting te doen en dat was prachtig! S'ochtends, op het begin van onze trip, werden we eerst op het midden van het eiland afgezet. Een goede educatieve intro werd er door een gids gegeven over het eiland. Daarna is iedereen vrij om de verschillende tracks te gaan lopen (3 tracks). Na deze prachtige hike en het zien van vele mooie vogels werden we opgehaald om de trip voort te zetten naar het noordelijke gedeelte. Wat een welkom door de eigenaar zeg, wat een engerie:) Het eten was zeer goed verzorgd tevens als het ontbijt en de lunch. In de avond ga je opzoek naar de kiwi, een zeer mooie ervaring om dit van dicht bij te mogen zien, thnx guys!! Loved it
