I was very impressed with the friendliness of Verena and Matt, and I loved my room which overlooked the garden. The bathroom and kitchen facilities are great and I enjoyed meeting other guests/residents. There is a library, a piano, and toys for littlies, who are made very welcome. My little granddaughter visited and she loved meeting the deer. I will be back next month.

The place is really nice...especially Matt was very kind generous n welcoming Went with friends and stayed overnight. The rooms were very spacious and beds were comfortable too.Used kitchen for cooking, it was also big spacious with all the utensils and facilities to cook. They have pet named shocks who is also friendly like owners.The garden at the back has cute deer.The sunrise view from the garden adds to the beauty of the place. Would certainly recommend the place to stay and would visit again sometime soon :)

Great hospitality from Verena and Matt and the rest of the staff! If you're planning on coming to Whanganui this is definitely the place to stay!

MAT AND VERENA Welcomed us into this amazing beautiful backpackers with lovely manners this place is so clean very friendly the best place we have stayed at 10/10 VERY CLEAN BEAUTIFUL ART WORK FROM TRAVELLERS ALL AROUND THE WORLD.The farm at the back is just so refreshing and healing was such an amazing stay beautiful beautiful accomadation .We loved our room great price great people would highly reccomend everyone to choose this place as your choice if you are travelling through Whanganui.Close to town restaurants and everything very amazing Thankyou so much Mat Verena & for hosting us we truely appreciated and enjoyed our stay. Great place to stay in a quiet part of town, within easy short walk to the City. Staff are really friendly and helpful, the place is clean, showers great, plenty of bathrooms. Kitchen is spacious and well stocked, dining room with books and games and a piano. Garden area, safe place for my bike. Great value for money. Such a lovely feel to it, would definitely recommend.

Great place, toilets, kitchen, people and secure locks. Slightly old but it has a nice vintage feel. Only issue is that there's no indoor couch/comfy communal space to chill, only the dining room and a ping pong table. May be good since it means you'll have an early night. Deer is SUPER cute tho!

This is a lovely place to stay! The owners are extremely kind and have created a warm, welcoming spot with super comfy beds. Great proximity to town but really quiet at night. Thanks for a restful, cozy night!

Such a good vibe in this hostel. A nice garden to chill in with Bella the deer and ducks. Recycling in the kitchen is good and the kitchen is well stocked. The rooms are clean and large. The bed not overly comfortable but not the worst. Breakfast included in the morning with fresh baked bread and cereals . Toast and spreads. Walking distance from the main town and supermarkets.

Great hostel. People are very warm and friendly. There's plenty of space in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Breakfast is included! The owners even drove me to the bus stop. Bedding could be improved but I still had a good night.

This is the best Hostel I've ever been to in my entire time of 4 months in New Zealand! The hosts and the rest of the staff were really kind and helpful to us, our room was quite nice and big. I mostly enjoyed the amazing piano, which sounds really clear and has an awesome quality. As a piano player this was my absolute highlight of the accommodation, so I would recommend the hostel 10/10! 42b College House is a sweet, enchanting backpackers. The family that runs this place are friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious and clean. There was easy access to a spotless bathroom and shower (which was hot and had good water pressure). The services and facilities are great. Verena and her husband were kind enough to pick us up and drop us off at the bus stop which has made our life much easier. There is a huge kitchen which is fully stocked with cooking ware, Ruapehu can be seen from the garden (which is a lovely spot to hang out), and breakfast is provided in the morning. Whanganui’s main strip is a short walk away. Overall, 42b College House has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and a bit of a family/community vibe to it too. A great place to stay if you are in Whanganui.

Very cozy Hostel. It is clean, does not cost much and the owners are very friendly. If you like, they pick you up from the Bus Station and get you there again when you leave for free. You can also get to the supermarkets and the City quickly by walking. I can recommend the hostel and would stay here again. Also: You get coffee, tea and a nice breakfast for free.

Incredibly friendly and helpful hosts, warm room and animal friends outside to say hi to. Group shared dinner with guest chef was impressive to watch and smell. Pillow and blanket supplied. Basic breakfast also free! Admittedly not my typical place to stay, walls are very thin and if you can see past the fact it generally does need a good spruce up its good value for money.

GREAT PLACE TO STAY! This hostel was a GREAT place to stay for a few days. The kitchen is nice with lots of space and they even had free coffee and tea. Walking down to the pubs aren't isn't a far walk and there is a pac'n'save that is pretty close as well. The staff are fantastic and very friendly. If I am ever back here I will definitely stay a few more nights!

Excellent place to stay. Owners are lovely people. I was a bit unlucky in the there due to unsavoury youngsters creating a ruckus in the middle of the night.

This is a nice hostel. Owners are really warm-hearted. The rooms have a good size and beds are comfortable. To the hostel belongs a big garden which is super when you want to enjoy the sun or just hang out :) They have a slogan at the wall saying "Home far away from home" which is definitely true. I felt home far away from home :)

I stayed for one week at the College House Backpackers and just loved it! The atmosphere, the breakfast - with selfmade bread - the location, the spascious rooms, the possibility to rent a bicycle and on top of that super friendly hosts! Another plus was the closeness to the public library which sits in the same street.

made a booking for a few nights, ended up living there for 2 months. the owners are the nicest people and will make everyone feel at home. kitchen is so well-equipped and there's plenty of space in the dorm rooms + fast unlimited wi-fi across the entire hostel and shower was always hot + they have animals in the yard♡ wonderful hostel with a really homey vibe, would definitely recommend for everyone!

I stayed a night in a double room in April. I highly enjoyed my stay: lovely atmosphere in kitchen and lounge with piano and garden with cuddly deer Bella and cute Guinea pig Sultan and a friendly rabbit in the garden. Very warm welcome and checkout by staff and owners!

Really nice hosts! And a beautiful garden with lots of animals :) Big, quite good equipped kitchen and free breakfast! Stayed with a friend in a 7bed dorm - luckily we were the only ones, because there was only a tiny window to open in the room. But overall, really good!

After a tiring 400 km bike ride, I went to BBH for a night halt. The rooms are pretty big and kitchen - toilets were absolutely clean and well maintained. The management (+ students/professionals staying there) were too humble and interactive to make sure I am feeling comfortable. Had some good interactions with Kiwi, French and Japanese nationals staying there. Overall Satisfaction - 5 star rating

As a semi-long-term resident here for the past few months I'd just like to acknowledge my utmost appreciation to you both Mat & Vereena 😍 especially for the caring sharing relaxed & joyful nature of you both . It was truly comforting.. Great hostel. Matt the owner is very friendly and helpful. WiFi is free. You can have dinner with them for a small contribution fee or you can walk 2 blocks to find most of the popular fast food joints. To tourists passing through, I highly recommend the Victoria Fish Shop 2 blocks away for their extremely well priced Fish And Chips combos.

You can park there for free. The owner are soooo nice ! Always checking if you need anything. Tell you the good spot to go ! And I share a dinner with them because they were saying goodbye to one member of the team. Very nice moment . You can go there it's the perfect place to go in Whanganui .

A great hostel with very friendly hosts. I felt very welcomed. Some animals make your stay special. There is lots of space you can just hang out, even outside its large area to sit, eat or relax. The hostel is close to the main shopping street and to some supermarkets. I can defenately recommend this place.

Really lovely hosts that help you in any way they can. I only stayed here for one night but really liked it here. Prices are very reasonable and WiFi is for free. Kitchen is great (knives could be a bit sharper though). Quite a big house, doesn't feel like it's booked out even when it is.

Super lovely family owned hostel with a great location. Kitchen has everything you need and beds are really comfortable. Heaters make everything extra cozy. The garden is nice to relax and they also have ducks, chickens and a cute deer. The owners also know the best things to do in and around whanganui and are just really open minded so it's nice to chat with them (in german or english). would definitely go back!

Really enjoyed it. Lots of very comfortable, clean rooms. Fast internet. The location was perfect in that there was no noise from traffic but a tiny walk to anywhere that you would want to go. Very friendly owner. He gave me a lift down to the bus stop after my stay which I really appreciated as I had lots of bags with me. It was very good value for money and I wood definitely stay there again. 10/10 would recommend.

I was well-treated by the best hostel hosts who I've never ever seen before. It was amazingly nice hospitality for tired traveller. And I loved inexpensive price and a professional kitchen. One thing that I regretted is I didn't take a pic with Bambi😭 I recommend this hostel!!! And enjoy your traveling!!!

One of the best hostel in new Zealand, I booked a double room for 1 night and we got the family room, nice garden with animals, everything clean, common areas with a lot of thing to do and read

College house is a great place to stay. Very friendly owners, very helpful. The large commercial kitchen allows plenty of room for all to prepare meals together with commercial fittings and appliances. Rooms are clean and warm with heating provided in the cooler months. A choice of rooms is also available. Large dinning room and lounge with pool table and table tennis, tv and dvd along with stereo.

The owners and staff were very friendly, informative and welcoming. Stayed for 2 nights, they had chooks and a deer out the back which was cool to see. A few piano's around the place and a ping pong table was fun. Close walk to town. Would definitely stay again

What a wonderful find!!! This is the most accommodating backpackers hostel I've been to in NZ. The staff not only picked my group up from the river for a ride to the hostel, they also helped arrange a bicycle trip for me to get to my next town! Highly recommended, especially if you are hiking the Te Araroa!

Definitely recommend people stay here when they visit Whanganui. College house is a really lovely and cozy hostel, the owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Stayed in the 9 bed dorm room and had a bed that was just really comfortable to sleep in (better than mine at home). The dorm room had two bunk beds and 5 single. The kitchen had a great selection of cutlery and utensils. It has an oven and two fridges (but only one freezer). There's a nice big garden to sit out at during the sun sunshine. At night the hostel is quiet meaning you can get a good sleep. The only downsides to the place are: while the Wi-Fi is free it's a zenbu hotspot and the codes are 2GB at a time. The dining room entrance is not directly opposite to the kitchen (makes carrying food a bit more tricky but it's minor).

Friendly and welcoming staff, who are always ready to help with a good knowledge base. Parking is good. Clean and tidy rooms and facilities. Great atmosphere and entertaining areas with a nice outside settings.

What a lovely place in Wanganui!! It's near by the river and right next to the supermarkets!! The owner is very kind and helpful:)) It's definitely one of the best hostels have been so far in NZ! I really enjoyed my week there :) Especially the atmosphere is awesome! So if you get to Wanganui i would highly recommend to check in there!! Otherwise you will miss something ;)

This is great backpackers. The owner is is lovely, and can't they do enough to help you out. Free Wifi, the rooms are pretty cheap. They also have a cat and a pet deer, what more could you ask for ?!

I have visited this hostel a number of times, hostel has a very warm and welcoming feel to it, all necessary facilities are provided and everything is exceptionally clean. Would definitely recommend this hostel!!

The best hostel in New Zealand is owned by the friendliest german hosts Matt and Verena with their lovely children. If you need help in any way i.e. drying a heavy wet sleeping bag, you can be sure they have got the answer. They provide you clean rooms and facilities in a stylish, nostalgic building. They help you finding all of the highlights of Wanganui. The proximity to the most important stores (i.e. supermarktes) makes the staying more than convenient.

I come to wanganui now and then for my work and this is the place i always stay here and thats because this is the best hostel i ve ever seen and Like Always My Experience Has Been Amazing. Oh and there's free breakfast too so i dont have to take a detour from my work for breakfast in the morning

Die Küche ist groß ausgestattet und es wird auf sauberkeit geachtet. Die sanitärräume werden auch regelmäßig gereinigt. Ich komme auf jedenfall navh der Südinsel noch einmal vorbei 👍
